If there's nothing sinister about any of this then why can't the player forego it and buy the item in question outright? Why aren't both options available. Have the fun of winning it maybe for less than the price it cost directly.

The reason you can't buy it directly is because they can make more money per customer if they only allow you to gamble to win it.

Why let me pay $10 for an in game skin when I can buy $40 worth of loot boxes and maybe still not even get it?

People like me I've never gambled in my life ever played the lottery or stepped foot in a casino because I believe gambling is stupid so I'm instantly turned off buy it but others who are addicted to gambling will blow through huge amounts of money on these type of games.

Do they even have to publish the odds of getting these items?

They only have to publish the odds if it falls under a countries law. China recently passed gaming regulations that force this. China’s New Online Gaming Regulations | ZhugeEX Blog

But the rates in China might actually be different than the ones in USA since there is no law. IMO the Overwatch system is fine. Loot box grind is tied into the gameplay really well. You dont need to buy shyt, you dont need to do any extra non game shyt to be able to obtain the boxes.

The NBA 2k model is demonic as fukk. I just saw today at a friends house.....a friend who had already spent real money (like 50 dollars!!!) on NBA2k currency by the way:francis:

I was like yo lemme get a game in on your myplayer, see how it is. I got an A- grade in a season game... You barely get shytTTT. You cant even update ANY of your attributes by ONE. Then Im like OK lemme run another since its only 5 min quarters. Hes like "nah bruh dont play again.... you gotta go to the gym and run laps to get your energy back!"

:gucci:

Im just like breh what the fukk. He goes to the in game gym but then hes like "I gotta wait this dude is on the machine" Im like :mindblown: why the fukk am I waiting to use a fukking treadmill in a basketball game.

OK. Then hes doing a minute and a half mini game of alternating between LT and RT just to get back the energy to play basketball. What the fukk :picard:

Hes like "Its dope tho I like the street ball games." He goes to the court.....and hes sitting there fukking waiting for next for 5 minutes :dead:
Im like "breh....what are we doing....im good on this lets just play the actual game" :smugdraper:

Then we fukking go and play some classic squads. "WORD the J KIDD Nets vs the 01-02 Kings!" :ahh:

Then I checked the rosters before the game starts.... Theres only 7 players on each team, the rest of the slots are filled with fake players. :dahell:

2k SCAMMED THE shyt OUT OF EVERYONE WHO BOUGHT THAT shyt :camby:

edit- i know this isnt lootbox related but these microtransactions in 2k are by far the most demonic shyt Ive seen in ANY videogame, period.

It will only get worse

My big problems with it are
1. It's completely unregulated gambling
2. There are no odds given for what you can win.

If it becomes regulated and they start posting odds, I'll still hate them but I'm fine with them existing. I legitimately feel they shouldn't be legal in their current state though

I don't mind loot boxes if its cosmetic stuff, and I also have the option of buying said cosmetics outright with in-game currency(ala Overwatch). If unlockables end up behind lootboxes, that's some fukk shyt.

exactly

dont mind the way overwatch does lootboxes at all

its actually very regulated. A lot of laws in video games you probably never heard of. So many that shut down Blizzard's billion dollar Diablo 3 auction house and some CS GO sites have been investigated for wrongful gambling advertising, etc.

Shadow of war is hiding it's true ending behind either grinding endlessly or buying loot boxes. Either grind for 40 hours extra or pay money to get the ending

Absolutely disgusting.

And of course meach is in here defending it because its in forza 7 :mjlol:
Loot boxes aren't inherently the problem. It's the way they are used that can be a problem.

Obviously the way they are used in shadow of war is problematic. Though I'd like to know what the "true" ending is and how you really get there.

A lot of these things get overblown cause people like being outraged.

Thanks Overwatch.

Shadow of War, Forza 7, WWE 2K18, Assassin's Creed: Origins, Star Wars Battlefront 2 pretty much every major new game has them now. Because it's not enough for you to buy DLC directly you need to buy a chance to get the piece of DLC you want or not.
You mean Borderlands? :usure:

To be fair all of Overwatch content is free. It just gives u a option to skip the grind. And it's really just the event items that buying loot boxes is even worth it.

Im not interested in any of the other games that were posted but it there is NO CHANCE of getting the items out of the lootboxes with normal gameplay then it shouldn't be compared to overwatch.
Skip the grind? Buy a game to play it then have the developer make the gameplay tedious enough to encourage you to pay more money to skip the gameplay you bought the game to play.

They don't put these microtransactions in the game hoping you don't spend real money on them. The fact that you can earn it in the game is to encourage you to spend real money. They make it very annoying and time consuming to earn ii the game so you'll get sick of it and pay to skip that.

I was watching the Totalbiscuit video and he was talking about how Blizzard fought against posting the odds because they say it ruins the mystique of the rare items and how they found loopholes to dodge it.

He starts on that at about 28:00 mins in.

Blizzard games arent Pay 2 Win or anything hidden behind micro transactions/loot boxes. They are all cosmetic and not needed to further your progress in any of the games.

Other companies may put PAy 2 Win items in or cinematics/endings behind pay walls. Not blizzard though, so not sure why you keep bringing them up.

I wonder if retail prices increased with inflation and/or not feeding the need for AAA titles constantly would've prevented or slowed down monetization in console games.
