Took control of North Africa from Carthage to Kemet and renamed everything..the Greeks got there first but the Roman's were more dominant.

Mansa Musa was literally not supposed to be Sultan.

He was basically the king's accountant. For him to maneuver to being the defacto ruler over the Sultan's family while multiple smaller empires are vying for independence from Mali has to be some of the most fukkery level politics of all time.
Mansa Musa became Emperor of Mali because his brother left the throne.

Africa's 'greatest explorer'

By Joan Baxter in Mali

An African emperor who ruled Mali in the 14th century discovered America nearly 200 years before Christopher Columbus, according to a book to be launched this month.

Abubakari II ruled what was arguably the richest and largest empire on earth - covering nearly all of West Africa.
According to a Malian scholar, Gaoussou Diawara in his book, 'The Saga of Abubakari II...he left with 2000 boats', the emperor gave up all power and gold to pursue knowledge and discovery.
Abubakari's ambition was to explore whether the Atlantic Ocean - like the great River Niger that swept through Mali - had another 'bank'.

In 1311, he handed the throne over to his brother, Kankou Moussa, and set off on an expedition into the unknown.

His predecessor and uncle, Soundjata Keita, had already founded the Mali empire and conquered a good stretch of the Sahara Desert and the great forests along the West African coast.

Amazing thread. Is there really no literature on any of these subjects that have been for lack of a better term, and the correct term according to said, orientalist
There is tons of literature on it. The real issue is that no one ever talks about it. Case in point is that everyone knows about the Great Wall of China, but how many people know about the Great Wall of Benin in Nigeria? The Great Wall in Benin is three times or four times larger than the Great Wall in China and regular folks don't even know that and on top of that the British destroyed major sections of the Walls of Benin; so as usual White people destroyed Black civilizations and then looted their empires only to then turn around a lie and claim that Black people never had any civilizations.

Then to confuse matters even more the old slave trading kingdom of Dahomey named itself Benin during colonialism, so now modern people don't even realize that that the modern Country of Benin is not the Empire of Benin. The Empire of Benin is in Nigeria.

Yeah there’s actually literature out there. Black scholars have been doing the work more and more but unfortunately a lot of groundwork is still being done by white scholars.

But I can safely say that Ethiopian political history could be its own Black version of Game of Thrones. Italian Eritrea was partly possible due to the political rivalry amongst the many individual rulers in the empire at the time.
