If we’re talking about impact and everything. Not my favorites(everyday struggle is my favorite on rtd, many men in grodt, protect ya neck on 36 chambers) but these seem like the first songs I would play for someone asking me about hip-hop.

California Love is on that list.

I think I gotta put Shook Ones pt. 2 there too.

Fight the Power for obvious reasons, but also, because they flat out start the song by saying 1989! and it still doesn't sound dated.

Then I'll go with In Da Club.

And as a surprise pick, Hov's Empire State of Mind. Big single and Hov summed it up perfectly. Radio friendly/"soft" sound yet the lyrics are not if you pay attention.

When I started this I was sure Nothin But a G Thang, Straight Outta Compton or Regulate woulda been on it. And some deserve to be on it more than that Hov song. But I tried to be objective and include songs from different eras too

I’d venture to guess (no particular order):

1. Can’t Touch This
2. Gin and Juice
3. Baby Got Back
4. Walk This Way
5. In Da Club

G Thang has to be in there though...somewhere.

If you think about which songs completely crushed the game it's:

Rappers Delight
The Bridge Is Over
California Love
Juicy
In Da Club

Not my favorites but when I think about both strength at the time of release plus lasting impact and historical value these are the 5.

when did juicy crush the game???

that didn't happen. that's puff's propaganda at work.
