I worked Navy civilian for 12 years. Traveled the world TDY 60% to Norfolk, San Diego, Mayport, Everett, Pearl, Rota, Yokosuka, Sasebo, FMS Korea, Japan, & Australia. I’d work on their ships during their construction period, doing IT stuff. It was a definitely a unique work environment, spending so much time on the ships as an outsider. I sometimes had to go out to sea and sleep in berthing :scust:so glad I never have to smell that again.

One thing I noticed over my career, certain rates that I worked with seemed to always be a certain race. OPS GM and cooks usually black, ET, FC, maybe GM usually white, Logistics usually Filipino.

With each ship, I had to deal with a different set of personalities and cultures. When I first started, some of the chiefs would give me hard time…not sure if it was because I looked so young or that I’m black.

I also worked on Coast Guard ships. They seemed to have it much easier than the Navy.
Where did you apply to get recruited for jobs like that?

Were you contracting or GS?

one quick caveat i wanna add @Amerikan Melanin

understand the DoD is posturing for a war with China. this means that even traditionally safe and cushy jobs like Space, Cyber, and Intel will be asked adopt a more agile concept in regards to being more flexible to operate in a contested Pacific conflict.

the point im making is we are in unknown territory with the future of war. really put this in context when deciding with your son about joining.

I don't have much experience with the other branches , but I remember walking one time to the cafeteria and I was in uniform and talking on the cellphone ( I'm Air Force) and this Navy dude comes up and tell me I can't be in uniform and be on a phone (which I can be , according to AF policies) so I just told him idc and kept walking.

so for that reason , fukk the gayvy.

also another thing: dont sleep on the reserves and ANG @Amerikan Melanin if your son only wants to get a trade and go to college then the guard or reserves could be an option.
The only caveat I tell people to consider with going guard or reserves is you will probably not have a full-time military job and all the benefits that come with that

GS, I got hired from speaking to a recruiter at a college career fair. I didn’t go to that college, just dropped in and got hired lol.

Apply on usajobs.gov, look for engineering or technician jobs in the cities I posted above.

I got a degree in logistics management but some of those logistics jobs want master degrees and 30 years experience. I don't need all that to look up overpriced highlighters in FedLog

Handle it like you should’ve

There was a lot of bytchass nikkas in the navy and I’m navy.

I used to hang out on the af base just to get away from the stupidity

Real shyt, I’m probably cool with more Army, AF, and Marines than I am actually Navy people outside of the OLD navy people.

Navy as a whole is a bunch of crabs in a barrel shyt imo. With the way they handle rank, their classist/elitism, etc.

Like lets say you make rank or skip ranks, these fakkits will try to lose your paperwork just so you can’t get what you earned. It happened to me. I was trained by a Navy Seal that got hurt and had to get a regular rate (job basically). He was a IT chief. I stood out immediately because I would always fall asleep in his class (it was boring and I knew all that shyt already).

Anyway, I finished top of his class which allowed me to go from E1 to E4 and choose my location that I wanted to go (choose a top 3 location). I do all that, got to my command, and these fakkits gonna tell me the paperwork that I signed to advance in rank was “lost”, no longer in my file and that I didn’t have proof of my advancement.

I was pissed. My grandma called me one day and I kinda let off how frustrated I was. She told me don’t worry about it and to keep doing what I need to do. I didn’t know that she called my A school and found the Seal dude somehow and cussed him out for it.. which led to him calling my new command, cussing THEM out, and forwarding my advancement paperwork and cussing them out again.

Man these fakkits HATED that.. and hated me for a long time to the point where despite me being excellent at my job, the would never give me the Evaluation needed to make rank to E5. It wasn’t until I got a new LPO (leading petty officer) who was a black dude and I helped his ass look good on a lot of projects (and I told him he could take credit for it because I was bitter af) did he decide to actually fight for me to make E5. I never tried to make E6 afterwards because E6 in the Navy is just a whipping boy for E7’s and above and I didn’t give a serious fukk about that shyt or want to be in charge of anything. I liked fixing shyt and going home which is perfect for E5 despite me being the go to tech for multiple projects, collateral duties, training new individuals, holding classes, etc

But the fukk shyt didn’t even end there

It’s crazy how rank is treated differently between the Navy & Marines. A Ssgt is definitely not a whipping boy for those higher ranks. Whenever we would go to Navy bases a lot of Chiefs would be hot that Ssgts were allowed in their Chiefs’ Mess. And on the other end I remember being in A school and there was a 3rd Class that tried to tell us Marines that we need to respect his rank just as we would a Corporal. We didn’t :mjlol:
