Basically, verbal judo is basically like regular judo where you are using other people's momentum to parry them, but you are not actively attacking/hurting them, you are redirecting or highlighting win/win outcomes

Written by a PHD professor-turned-cop, so it is a more nuanced/educated view on law & order and less MAGA/racist. Lots of it is verbal de-escalation that the author learned by watching some vets on the force... admittedly none of it has permeated the police force as a whole. It is written for everyday people but the author has the perspective that there are a lot of people (cops included) who needlessly ramp up interactions that lead to conflict, but how this can be avoided with more empathy/thoughtful responses.

Some quirky stories in here, including his fukk ups like where he used excessive force for non-compliance. On the flipside, he has stories about de-escalated a man threatening suicide by telling him that electrocution in a bath tub is too painful of a way to go but if he is cool with coming out of the tub, he will help him find another, less painful way to kill himself, another situation where he talks down a man threatening to kill his 'possessed' son, etc. One of my favs so far is a mentor of his walked into the house of an arguing couple and just grabs a newspaper and reads it before placing a call to try and buy a car in the classified section. The couple go from arguing, to mildly interested, to completely bewildered (and no longer fighting).

<< In its Basaa conception of God [Ŋyambe] is figured in the image of man’s: a mould of man’s in his own image. In relation to “man in society,” the nkong Hisi [the Universe] appears as a macrocosm. Myths and legends in this regard are respectively the sublimation of the real and idealization of that reality. Ŋyambe has always been: if he is the originator of all that is, of the universe, men and the species, he is also the generator of all. Ŋyambe may be apprehended as the ORIGINATOR AND THE SET OF DESCENDANTS. All arise from him but he is at the same time transcendent. The universe, of the elements, men and the species, has the aspect of a five-branch tree known among the Basaa people as simngaŋ. In this cosmo-human tree, ALL THE COMPONENTS ARE ORDERED IN A HIERARCHY EACH ONE SEEMING TO ARISE FROM EACH OTHER IN A SINGLE LINE OF DESCENT. We would emphasise [sic] the purports on ties of filiation between Ŋyambe and his creation. But the basis of hiearchisation is the power to confer to other existing entities, some amounts of the power to create [of generation]. In the beginning there is Ŋyambe who alone possesses in its totality the power of generation and who verily is himself the very power of generation. Then there are spirits and Ancestors who are in contact with Ŋyambe. At the lower rung are the ba-mbombog [initiates into mbog], and who inherited the prerogatives of the first Ancestors. We would cite those who have received blessings and have been honoured by the ba-mbombog. Finally, there are ordinary persons whose behaviour is congruent with ancestral ethics. Criminals and evil-doers who are thought to be non-beings, are not considered. (Mandenge, 2012: 353-354) >>

Shyt is maddening. As of now I just watch her put the book down and stare into the distance. She does that a lot with this book that’s why I can’t wait to read it. Some of the shyt she recites is absolutely nuts.
