What did you think of Drake as alyricist before the ghost writer shyt surfaced?

I didn't see him as a lyricist at all, he had decent bars at best. I just thought he made good hit records, still do for the most part. Nothing about him says "bars" to me, before or after the ghostwriter reveal, always put him more in the 50 Cent or Nelly type of lane (in terms of making hit records) more than the Nas or Jigga type of lane. When it comes to the lane that he's in he's probably the best ever, even with the ghostwriters and sweat shops that construct his songs/melodies for him and the business conglomarates and gangster "mob ties" that keep his public detractors to a minimum...regardless of them truths it's also true that no one in rap has made hit records for a longer period of time

Dude came out the gate freestylin off a blackberry in 2009 and was a clear pop act.
If u just found out he didnt write during that meek shyt then u werent paying attention.

Plus even IF he wrote his stuff he wouldn't be a Top 10 lyricist or some shyt.

During So Far Gone days, on tracks like Ignorant shyt, I thought he was an above average lyricist. Anyone that can't acknowledge any of his skills as a rapper are just fools.

If he was making music that sounded like some Scarface or Nas type shyt and you told me he didn’t write it, then I’d have a problem with Drake. But idgaf if he wrote Hotline Bling or Started From the Bottom because he’s not saying anything deep, personal or significant.

Ghostwriting aside, there's a good amount of guys better than him at rapping and making rap music. He's not better than Cole, Kendrick, gates, wale, Sean, game, East, Ross, ect. All those guys spit much better than Drake does.

That's why I don't understand his desperation to be seen as a top notch *rapper* because there's too many guys who are simply better at it than him. Take away all his pop tracks from the last 4-5 years and leave just the rap ones, who is he beating, bar for bar, with that catalog...? That isn't the evaluation he wants.
