Problem with these answers is dudes keep taking whole songs and albums into account, that's not what's being asked.

Is Drake flat out a better RAPPER than the guys I mentioned? I mean, at best you can say he's on par. But he's not superior to a lot of guys how some of you keep making it seem. His shyt is really basic as hell man. At least the guys I mentioned have layers to their raps, Drake clearly writes verses for the hoes and their IG captions. His content is shallow as hell.

And if we're gonna keep giving him credit because the current pool of rappers isn't the strongest, then all that tells me is he's above average. Doesn't mean he belongs in the upper tier of rappers.
Drake stans are so biased

Worse fan base next to Eminem

Honestly after 9am in Dallas it raised my antennas but once Paris Morton Music dropped followed by stay schemin, Dreams money can buy, Free spirit and then Take Care I would’ve but him up there with Cole and Kendrick.

If you really been following Drakes career you know his sound and approach to rhyming on IYRTITL was different than his previous albums. It wasn’t his best album lyrically by any means so the ghost writing exposure wasn’t that damaging to me. I thought maybe Quentin was helping him layered new flows. BUT finding out OVO Hush all over the credits to Take Care and NWTS was more damning imo

I don't think I ever really had an opinion on him. I always thought he was decent, but he was never someone I paid attention to. I remember being like :dwillhuh: when "Hold On, We're Going Home" came out because there were no bars on it.

But the ghostwriting was what killed any credibility he might have had as a legitimate MC. Especially because around the same time, he was on Sprite cans with Nas, Biggie, and Rakim like he belonged anywhere near their class. :scust:

I thought he was a breath of fresh air during the So Far Gone period. Thought he showed marked improvement during Take Care. Thought he was in danger of becoming a caricature of himself with Nothing Was The Same because he wasn’t showing any growth with his concepts or themes.

After the Ghostwriting shyt it took away what respect I had for him as a hit maker and I haven’t cared since. He’s an artist by committee. We can’t take artists by committee serious as MC’s. They are Pop artists

His pen was questionable since day one
Dude came out the gate freestylin off a blackberry in 2009 and was a clear pop act.
If u just found out he didnt write during that meek shyt then u werent paying attention.

Plus even IF he wrote his stuff he wouldn't be a Top 10 lyricist or some shyt.
His stuff just reads a lot better on paper than almost every rapper in this trash era tho that's about it.

This bit of video exposed dude on multiple levels for me, not just the fake lyrics but the fake persona as well.

That hand on the hip, the way he was lost, the deer eyes, all screamed FAKE Never been outside during Nigh time type.

Still cringe when I see it :hhh:

thought he was a great rapper, had tons of quotables IMO. 5AM in Toronto, Free Spirit, Ignant shyt, Throw it in the Bag remix, HYFR, were all personal examples i would cite of him having all of the elements of a great rapper. Even a song like Headlines was almost a perfect merger of rapping with pop sensibilities....Yeah its pop tinged but you have to be a good rapper to make it work.

After hearing IYTITL i was about to place this nikka in my top 3 of all time!

But then the ghostwriting rumors came.

Average but had good songs. Like many he had some songs where he was going in :yeshrug:. If yall were paying attention he had writers from early on with Nickelus F :sas2:

I remember that clear shift when the whole world decided his trash ass 2nd album was as good as Watch the Throne :mjlol:, and thats coming from someone who was a big fan prior to that. That was around 2011-12 when white people all of a sudden decided to like rap bc you had mfs who never listened to a rap song become Kendrick stans overnight with Swimming Pools :mindblown:. All that HYFR and YOLO meme shyt put him over the edge in a big way

To be honest it was all over for me as a Drake stan once I heard that single where he was warning people about "hyping him up and making him catch a body like that" :snoop:. It was such a massive departure from his previous shyt that it put me off him completely :manny:

Same as now. He's always had good delivery and style. Great wordplay at a decent rate, doesn't excel at punchlines or intricate rhyme schemes, but understands what he needs to do within each style he's adopted to be above average performing vocally.

Doesn't do anything super outstanding to me as far as lyricism goes, but he always makes the right decision in the song-making process.

Well the ghostwriting shyt was rumored pretty early so I always felt he was suspect and ranked him accordingly.

If you leave out the fact that he's had some nikkas hand up his ass most of his career, I'd put rank him about the same class as Ross, competent rapper who has created a strong consistent brand/vibe. And while I don't doubt Ross' pen, I've never been impressed with him, nor Drake which is kind of the benchmark for me if we talking about lyrics. Ain't nothing he ever spit make me be like "I wish I wrote that" :whew:

I thought he was nice but not the greatest of his generation as he claimed
