There are several different tribes that roamed the Americas before European settlers. The most prominent being Incas, Myans, Caribs, Arawaks/Tianos, Seminoles, Cherokees, Capachees. Most of the members of these tribes died off and the remaining few mixed with the Europeans.
That makes their descendants mixed race or mezitos.
Some have a higher percentage of Euro DNA other have a higher percentage of Native DNA, the descendants from tribes in the US more than likely have very little Native DNA.
A Mexican referring to themselves as Native American would be the equivalent to an African American referring to themselves as African or Nigerican, or a person from DR referring to themselves as Tiano.

But the average Mexican has 50% Native DNA, as opposed to the average Puerto Rican or Dominican who is only 10% Native or so.

The DR for the most part is a mulatto country, indigenous ancestry there is minuscule from a maternal line. The closest Dominican with indigenous features I've seen is Rosa Acosta, she has the shovel shaped incisors.

When I lived in Arizona there were a lot of them, most weren't that cute but a few were. They have really strong, long, beautiful hair that they are very proud of. Sadly they're genetically predisposed to alcoholism so a lot of them are addicts to the bottle.

A lot of times you'll see someone that looks Mexican, but then they start talking with 0 Mexican accent and you're thrown off a bit, In a lot of ways they're kind of like prototype Mexicans.

I grew up wit Natives & have many that are so close we call each other family so ive seen them come in all shapes & sizes... on the South Side we even got an area dubbed the "Native Projects" & multiple Native Culture centers.... i know Natives that can bounce back & forth from the Rez & get them checks.... my last chick was an Ojibwe Native (wit a splash of white) from ND....

I didnt know about them stats or Native droughts but I cant fathom a day when im out & about & don't see a Native....

It seems pretty simple to me.

The Americas were colonized by the English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.

The English & French took the U.S. & Canada (outside of the Southwest)

The Spanish & Portuguese took Central and South America.

Therefore the Natives got mixed with whoever was around colonizing them.
