This thread is disrespectful to Isiah.

Outside of Kobe & Lebron who are head and shoulders better than all these NBA players over the last 10 years these new players should not be compared to the NBA legends from the 80's & 90's who were superior players.

Chris Paul is not even better than Westbrook or Curry so comparing him to Isiah is a joke.

Players went so much harder back then and the defense was way tougher.

Huh? Not disrespectful to him at all to be compared to Chris Paul. He's one of the most complete players to ever play the position. I know its hard for people to do but if you can somehow look past the lack of team success and actually see how well he generally plays in the postseason as an individual + his remarkably consistent elite level of play in the RS he should be given credit as an all time great. If you swap him with Tony Parker we're having a different discussion today

In addition to those two Paul, Dirk, Wade, Duncan, Garnett among others should all be compared with legends from the 90s and prior. Nothing wrong with the league today, people that obsess over handchecking criminally overlook how the removal of the illegal defense rule has made it strategically easier for teams to load up on superstars especially in the post. We've had the KG led Celtics, Thibs Bulls, Big Ben Pistons, J Kidd Nets, Duncan Spurs, LBJ Heat and Vogel Pacers in this era so it hasn't been a cakewalk of any sort
The irony of insinuating that Isiah Thomas is overrated when speaking about him in comparison to Cliff Paul:heh:

But to answer the question, Isiah is better at playoff success, fair or not, that counts for a lot when we rate players greatness. For example, Karl Malone and Charles Barkley would be looked at much more favorably if the would have won rings. Imagine if John Stockton would have won a few rings, they would have that boy as a top 5 player:mjlol: It is what it is man. Cliff needs to win something or history will not be kind to his legacy.

Wasn't suggesting that IT was overrated but I definitely think its the opposite with Paul. The general consensus is that he's overrated. Damn near everyone outside of Clippers fans says that he is so he can't really be that

I can definitely see how rings are a part of people's criteria for ranking all time greats. Can't have a problem with that since its all subjective, but in terms of just comparing two guys straight up as peak players removing rings I'd say Chris compares well to anyone at the position sans Magic & Oscar (who btw has 0 rings if not traded to the Bucks with young Kareem) who were so dominant in part due to their size. Personally I care way more about how well a player actually performs as opposed to their ring count since team factors and circumstance will come into play. To each there own but thats how I choose to view the game which gives more appreciation to guys like Karl and Chuck who I can't hold not winning a ring against them as individual players when some lucky bounces or more fortunate outcomes would change that

Both are 6 foot 1 but Isiah looks a couple pounds smaller and Paul is Def slower but don't knock Chris Paul he's a good player minus the flopping.

And :francis:

Isiah listed at 6'1 180, Cliff Paul is 6' 175. He only looks lighter because Cliff wears a baggy uni and Isiah was rocking the old school, super tight uni.

No, defenses weren't better. Average team defense now is 10x what it used to be and defensive schemes are much more complicated.

Oh, Curry is better than Zeke. On an entirely different planet as a scorer.

wow, im baffled by most responses in here.. the answer is that isiah doesn't do much better than chris paul, if anything at all. They arent really close as basketball players, cp3 is clearly better.

CP3 is a better scorer, shooter, much more efficient offensively, better defensively, better passer, turns the ball over less and a better rebounder. these are the things measured by numbers. Objectively, he's better at these things.

Isiah has the be the most overrated player in NBA history. I'm not sure he cracks my top 10 PG list. I rank Magic, CP3, Nash, Robertson, Payton, Kidd, Stockton all clearly ahead of him. And as soon as they have the longevity to justify it; Westbrook and Curry will surpass him too, easily.
