Google the phrase ‘Hardest working man in show business’

As far as music is concerned, what Miles and Louis did for Jazz, Michael did for Pop, Aretha did for soul, Muddy did for blues is what James did for Funk and Soul. The man is the King Of Funk, The Godfather Of Soul, and the very definition of music royalty

I’m not going to get into his political views too much, but he supported leftist candidates until he realized he was under surveillance by the CIA and the FBI (back when they were more flagrant with the killing and harassing of black leaders). Congress found out the CIA was working with the FBI to sabotage groups that were considered threats to national security i.e., leftist antiwar protesters and Black militants

J Edgar already had already issued a directive to: "Prevent the rise of a 'messiah' who could unify and electrify the militant black nationalist movement.

👆🏿 This article doesn’t mention Brown, but being outspoken and singing about “being black and proud” didn’t sit well everyone, especially since the FBI kept popping up randomly and doing searches

CIA: So James, word on the street is “you’re black and you’re proud,” amirite?

:comeon:

James: :huhldup::whoa::mjpls:

He wrote a letter to Nixon about his situation and after he went to the White House that breh left with a new perspective on life

There was a case pending in 2022 to get the information from the CIA about James Brown and they responded with, “disclosing whether it has records on Brown could cause serious damage to U.S. national security.”

Anybody in here trying to make false equivalencies to what’s happening now need to chill and let that man rest

King James is the Alpha of modern Black music with no Omega
There is Black music pre JB and post JB. It is a thick and distinct line in the sand.
Just off top, without JB you don't have MJ, Prince, Sly, or George Clinton.
Without JB, you don't have the Golden Age of hip-hop.
It's really heavy when you think about it and he still has not received his just due.

To be clear, I didn’t make this thread because I believe James Brown should be cancelled. In fact, it’s the opposite. I don’t believe in cancelling anybody (that I was already a fan of) and would never tell anyone whom they should cancel.

Context matters breh

Yea it’s way more complex than a picture. James was trying to help black folks. Nixon screwed him over in 68. So Nixon was up for re election in 72, so he begged James Brown for an endorsement. In turn, James approached Nixon in good faith with an agenda, his endorsement for a list of black empowerment issues. Nixon told James he would make a holiday for MLK amongst other things. Nixon was a two faced treacherous cac, he lied to James and mocked him behind his back, James got hip and moved on.

I think it was also him trying not to get put on a T Shirt. Malcom died, King died, black Panthers were in jail or ran out of the US, and the FBI was legitimately surveilling and harassing that man

I think he had a real fear for his safety cause he expressed as much in 2005. But it seems folks want to ignore all that history and turn this into, ‘wasn’t he just another c00n?’
