metabolism slows down as you age
furthermore, you have less time as a result of likely having jobs with more responsibilities and obligations (i.e., a family) so if you havent already built healthy eating habits and/or exercise habits then it becomes that much harder to build them as you age. that + the slower metabolism is a recipe for disaster. i personally wont date a girl who isnt a gym rat unless shes thin and has a healthy diet

Metabolism slows down so that “calories out” portion becomes more difficult

Your metabolism slows down, so you're gaining weight just by consuming the same amount of food you used to eat before. You need to either increase your activities, which is also harder in your 30's because you have less free time, or reduce your calories intake more drastically then in your 20's. Being over 30, 6ft2, 175 pounds, my base metabolic rate is around 1900 calories, that is not a lot.

Central to their findings was that metabolism differs for all people across four distinct stages of life.

  • There’s infancy, up until age 1, when calorie burning is at its peak, accelerating until it is 50 percent above the adult rate.
  • Then, from age 1 to about age 20, metabolism gradually slows by about 3 percent a year.
  • From age 20 to 60, it holds steady.
  • And, after age 60, it declines by about 0.7 percent a year.

Metabolism misconceptions.

It's a mentality thing. When we're really young we're used to exercising naturally and being outside. You're probably not working as much or having to bother with adult responsibilities.

A lot of :flabbynsick: men and women give up, whereas younger folks more likely to push through. Young people believe in the impossible. That's in everything. Look at all the people who accept their fate at their jobs, their position in life.

Some people just don't prioritize working out. It's okay to admit. And it ain't supposed to be easy. :yeshrug:

Every poster came in here with the lie of their metabolism slowing down at 30 when it really doesn't stop for another 30 :flabbynsick:

It gets harder as you get older, but it ain't impossible as some people make it seem. It's not a coincidence we get more sedentary as we age and subsequently we get :flabbynsick: as we age. If you prioritize it and you don't have some kind of underlying illness, you might not look like an Adonis or siren in your 50's can get to a reasonable weight. And you can hold up through your 40s if you prioritize.

It definitely differs for everyone. My sister couldn’t gain wait at all till she hit 35. Nothing changed diet or exercise wise, but she started gaining wait after that point.

In general people at 30+ have kids and more obligations. It’s hard to find time to work out when you need to spend time bathing, feeding, teaching, etc…. other people. For example today after I pick up my oldest kid from after school care he has to eat a snack, go to baseball practice, eat dinner, do his homework, take a bath, read a book, then be put to bed. At 6 years old, all of those things require the time of an adult. And I have more than 1 kid.

I have found that, as I have matured (40s), in addition to going to the gym and playing ball, I work out smarter, not harder.

I do the following:

- take the stairs more times than not,
- yardwork (burns hella calories),
- I go into work 1 day a week; when leaving work, I casually walk a mile to the subway even though there's a station 100 ft from my job's door,
- do leisure activities with a weighted vest (like 15 to 20 lbs). For example, the same yardwork, etc.
- when I catch the train, I get on the car that is the furthest from the station's exit. For example, for those that know in DC, Stadium- Armory station exit is at the end of the car. I get on the train at the front of the train forcing me to walk all the way to the end to exit. Hope that makes sense.

By no means do I have a 6-pack, but I find these small things keeps the :flabbynsick: at bay.

While he is at baseball practice, you can get in 20 mins of jump rope..

It’s all about how important you think your vitality is..
