Mass Effect after I bought Mass Effect Andromeda. The game made me fall in love with franchise. I almost gave up on ME1, but I powered through it. 2 and 3 were huge improvements.

Just Cause and Call of Juarez. The only games I've picked up without research or word of mouth
2 is in my top 5 fave games. Mine is Metal Gear Solid. Picked up the game randomly because I was bored and wanted something new to play. Wasn’t used to a game where you didn’t just kick in the door and start blasting.
Ace Attorney series (maybe not a whim per se, cause I was on gamefaqs and the DS board would talk about it occasionally, how it's a "lawyer sim" and I thought that'd be pretty ridicious but decided to give it a go)
