What happened to gimmicks and cool names?

For a while me and my boys would not realy watch wrestling but buy the rumble. One year we were saying this like every wrestler had a Jon Smith type name. Then Drew McIntyre (who none of us had seen before) came out. And we all lost it

Why does EVERYONE need a god damn last name?


Unless the name itself has ring to it and sounds cool, get RID of it or give them something else

Doesn't help they all have twitters and refer to their shyt as "characters"



I remember checking Bray Wyatt's twitter expecting some shyt, but this dude having normal ass conversations with BABYFACES



I still lose sleep over the fact that they referring to them as "characters"



I knew it wasn't the hyper-realism even as a kid, but I would still be shook to walk up to a guy like Kane or the Undertaker and ask for an autograph because they had the aura.


The only monster I'd be on some shyt walking up to would be Brock

Totally agree with all of this. People love to boo The Miz and give him shyt but he has a gimmick, an actual character, can cut a different promo, and actually has a different style name. Not to mention has a decent look and solid in the ring. And giving him a heel manager has only improved him even more. Come to to think of it, Miz is one of my faves atm

Take someone like Sami Zayn, what the hell is his gimmick outside of hairy white guy who is good in the ring?

Ahhhh you know what, I thought you meant literally the types of names. Even with that, there's a way to have a gimmick yet not be so overly hokey. I think the Wyatts are a good example of that (that I think Bray should limi the lengthy promos to backstage skits and not in the ring).

I agree with Bray, although I don't want him with a "demonic" overtones. He can be effective as a creepy backwoods persona.

These cats vanilla as fukk give you no reason to get invested in matches and feuds guys just go out and do a bunch of stupid spots and wrestle 30 minutes for nothing just generic boring ass booking.

I'll forever respect Miz for the simple fact that everything he has done and what he does now was HIS CREATION... WWE had no parts creating the Miz. "The Miz" was his brainchild and he developed it and he ran with it all the way to the WWE Title and to the main event of WrestleMania that's why his gimmick is pretty awesome. I still trip out watching this video from time to time to see how far his gimmick has come:

I like how they've taken Cesaro. Different name, cool entrance, different gimmick, nice nickname (Swiss Superman), good look and beast in the ring. Just needs a new theme and maybe a manager/better promo skills and he's a star in the waiting

Exactly. Take Gangrel (I know I keep mentioning him but fukk it), dude was only in WWE for a few years; never won a title but is one of the most memorable WWF/E characters of the last 20 years (imo), and knowing WWE he'll be in the HOF in the future. Why? Because he had a cool gimmick/theme/name/entrance the whole package, was he good/shyt in the ring? Can't remember. But who cares, it's his gimmick that's remembered 15 years later and will be still be known for another 15.

Not many of the roster can say that. Heath Slater? Curtis Axel? Darren Young?

CFO$ need to make Cesaro a theme that sounds like Skyfall or Goldeneye or one of the good James Bond films

They had to choose between reality Era or go full lucha underground. They chose reality just because it easier to just embrace the "dirt sheets" and beat them to the punch than try to keep tight lips on stuff like nakamura and AJ signings. I think TNA so corny they should probably just go full lucha underground with the gimmick just as an American style fed.

Sheamus is another who people like to give shyt towards, but he's got a different name, cool nickname (The Celtic Warrior); epic theme/entrance, unique look and very good in the ring. Also actually has a gimmick, something which most guys on the roster lack; women included. Might not be the most charismatic guy, but guy is very underrated.

Austin generated a character that blurred the line of face/heel, using Heel tactics to get Face pops.
