How do you change making copy/cat trendy records without changing the culture? That's one of the biggest challenges right there. If the culture due to radio/tv airtime are only playing club mostly, as a artist how do you go against that grain without changing the culture in some way

All the real singers with talent often are overlooked, under-pushed

The same thing that happened to hip hop.. Blurred lines, unoriginality, payola and Black cultures overall decline in mainstream America...
I think the opposite is true...

As soon as artists start "trying to be different" then you know a genre is about to change if those artists become popular, and it is NOT always for the good...

Trying to be "original" and "different" is what kills OLD genres births NEW genres...

Creativity is Life and Death...

that's true. Now any rapper who can sing even a little, can be auto tuned. Drake, Wayne, and the rest cant hit notes to save their lives.

I'm too young to remember the New jack swing era. I only found out later the criticism it received. Putting the R&B melodies, with hip hop elements. So today its the reversal. This is like any fad, sooner or later singing will be required again.

I'm an overlap of late 90s and early 00s, my favorite time was the Neo Soul explosion, while there was still a lot of R&B on the radio. A lot of good stuff was being put out at the time.

New Jack Swing was about love/ cheating/ getting back at a cheater/ dancing in the club

It was :blessed: and focused on having a good time, instead of going to the club and catering to no good hoes.

what we need in america is another great depression to destroy the economy and get people off thier cellphones and facebook and reinstill those values and togetherness of people

i hate to say it but it's true

we need to be destroyed and rebuilt like nas said

Good luck with that. Take away the internet and cellphones, and anarchy will happen. I mean to the point where society can't even rebuild itself.

 unless you sing Motown type shyt the public tends to ignore R&B and judges don't suggest it.

Also, these American Idol /Voice /X Factor shows don't help.

That and there's a negative stigma towards singing lovey dovey shyt to women.

The Temptations would be looked at as some hoe ass simps today

Groups that sing about love are laughed at. People took the baller mentality and b*stardized music as we know it.

one thing thats missing in todays r and b compared to the 80s and 90s is the chemistry between the artist and producer/songwriter. temptations had smokey robinson. brandy and rodney jerkins. braxton and babyface.

2. lack of music groups. some people arent meant to be solo artists. there's some groups where one artist did all the singing and we thought. they mine as well go solo. well now you learn to appreciate a mike bivins and a ronnie devoe.

3. lack of maturity. back then younger artists could stay in their lane. but a 20-40 year old could still listen to it. like monica, brandy, tevin campbell, shanice.

Yep. I agree. too much fast food music is being made for it to really be put out there for mature people.
