What if athletes salaries were performance based rather than fully guarenteed?

That only works if ticket prices and merchandise prices were directly tied to the winning percentage and success of a franchise. That would be a fair check and balance to the owners.

Fans do a have choice in terms of buying tickets or merchandise though. If fans are willing to pay to see a 25-57 it's not the owners fault. Much like if owners are willing to pay max money to less than max guys it's not the players fault. Fans supporting shytty ownership doesn't help the product on the court. Just like owners paying shytty/lazy players doesn't help the product on the court.

I've suggested something like this in the past. Instead of cutting into their guaranteed money I think that they players should basically have the chance to double their salary based on team success. For example Bron is getting what...18 mil this year? If the Heat win the Finals this year that number should be $36 mil or so. So instead of taking money away from players you give them the chance to make even more based on how the team performs. That way you truly reward guys for winning.

That works too. Something should be added as an incentive to compete.

But I guess it goes beyond just the players. You have to motivate the owners too. Lotta cheap owners out there who don't care if his team wins or loses. If you could find a way to motivate the entire organization from top to bottom, that would be ideal.

You think you have super teams now????????

Dude if you implement that then there is no hope for any mid to bottom level team through free agency. You would have to guarantee the worst teams in the league get the top 3 picks, none of that lottery shyt because if you didnt they would remain at the bottom in perpetuity.

The only way a good player would sign with a bad team is if you hyper-inflate his salary so that even if they miss the playoffs he still gets a high salary, but then when you start making the playoffs his salary is gonna balloon and push you over the salary cap.

There is a salary cap. Beyond that the league has always been top heavy, is top heavy, and always will be top heavy. Players will always gravitate towards the top teams and destination cities. :yeshrug: Short of limited who those teams can sign there is no way around that shyt. Everybody can't go to those top teams so it's up to those lesser teams to make good moves and draft well.

Players are entertainers/athletes.

This is an entertainment business, where as the STARS are getting paid entertainment money.

It's no different than other forms of high revenue entertainment businesses.

Damn that's a good point. Can't lie. When you look at them as entertainers, then yea you're 100% right. They deserve everything they get.

And fortunately for them the business is in entertaining, not necessarily in winning.

But as a FAN, as someone who follows and CARES about the game, I'm just sayin I wish there was a better way. One where there's importance placed on actually WINNING.

Make EVERYTHING favor the team owners, brehs.

Forget the the team owners make bank regardless of "performance," brehs.

Make the players like race horses, brehs.

Blame the players, not the decisions of the GM, for uncompetitive franchises, brehs.

It would never work. No matter what the incentive, somebody is always just happy to collect a check, don't matter how big or small. It will cause internal turmoil. And have players intentionally fukking up to shyt on teammates.

You still wouldn't be getting market value for your talents. It's ok for the owners and executives to rake in the dough, but everyone always wants the athletes to take a pay cut, even though they already did after the last lockout.

Yea if they were to implement something like this then I'd say the players should def earn a share in the revenue the team gets overall from merch, tv, tickets, etc
