That only works if ticket prices and merchandise prices were directly tied to the winning percentage and success of a franchise. That would be a fair check and balance to the owners.
Fans do a have choice in terms of buying tickets or merchandise though. If fans are willing to pay to see a 25-57 it's not the owners fault. Much like if owners are willing to pay max money to less than max guys it's not the players fault. Fans supporting shytty ownership doesn't help the product on the court. Just like owners paying shytty/lazy players doesn't help the product on the court.
I've suggested something like this in the past. Instead of cutting into their guaranteed money I think that they players should basically have the chance to double their salary based on team success. For example Bron is getting what...18 mil this year? If the Heat win the Finals this year that number should be $36 mil or so. So instead of taking money away from players you give them the chance to make even more based on how the team performs. That way you truly reward guys for winning.
Short of limited who those teams can sign there is no way around that shyt. Everybody can't go to those top teams so it's up to those lesser teams to make good moves and draft well.
