I know the NFL doesn't guarantee everything up front but what if you make salaries incentive based?

Let's use the NBA for example. Let's say instead of guaranteeing a player X amount a year, you give him the OPPORTUNITY to make X amount a year. You do it for the whole team. Everyone has the chance to make full pay but they have to earn it.

So let's say everyone on the team is set to make X amount of dollars this year.

- If we don't make the post season, everyone on the team only earns 60% of what they were guaranteed.
- If we make the post season, everyone on the team earns 70% of what they were guaranteed.
- If we make the second round, everyone on the team earns 80% of what they were guaranteed.
- If we make conference finals, everyone on the team earns 90% of what they were guaranteed.
- If we make the finals, everyone on the team earns 100% of what they guaranteed.
- If we win the championship, everyone on the team also gets a 10% bonus.

PROS

- Forces everyone on the team to stay competitive year round.
- Forces players to earn their salaries instead of half-assing after inking a deal.
- Forces players (and teams) to put an emphasis on WINNING more than anything else.
- Forces free agents to take other things into consideration outside of location and market size.

CONS

- Cheap owners who don't care about being competitive will love not having to pay full salaries.
- Players stuck on bad teams are gonna have light pockets (still richer than 99% of the american population tho)

Whachu think?

So to get 100% of what you sign for you'd have to make the finals, meaning that every player in the league except for 24-30 guys would be making less than their contract?

I know, but allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment.

Why should teams that perform at an abysmal level be rewarded exactly the same as a team that performs at an elite level?

Why should I root for a bunch of millionaires who don't care if they win or lose?

You still wouldn't be getting market value for your talents. It's ok for the owners and executives to rake in the dough, but everyone always wants the athletes to take a pay cut, even though they already did after the last lockout.

That only works if ticket prices and merchandise prices were directly tied to the winning percentage and success of a franchise. That would be a fair check and balance to the owners.

So last years Pacers that were one game away from the finals didn't deserve 100% of their contracts?

This is a dumb idea any way you slice it. Players taking pay cuts just means the owners get to rake in even more cash.

It's not about you, it's about the players being paid a salary representative of a percentage of the tv sponsorships and other revenues generated and raked in due to them playing on tv. This is a business, but fans always get jealous and start hating on player salaries not understanding the concept of market value.

I don't want athletes to take a pay cut. That's not the intent.

But as FANS, it wouldn't hurt to know that the players and the team that you root for do care about winning and aren't just out there running scrimmage for millions.

If you could somehow give these guys more incentive to win, I think it would improve things overall. It goes for every sport.

I don't think any nba player wants to lose, or any sportsman for that matter. Some teams are just better than others, so no matter what the incentive, the Bobcats aint fukkin with the Heat. How about the owners and gms take a pay cut as well while you're at it? Again, nobody wants to fukk with the white dudes in suits money, but them black players? Oh people get mad.

You think you have super teams now????????

Dude if you implement that then there is no hope for any mid to bottom level team through free agency. You would have to guarantee the worst teams in the league get the top 3 picks, none of that lottery shyt because if you didnt they would remain at the bottom in perpetuity.

The only way a good player would sign with a bad team is if you hyper-inflate his salary so that even if they miss the playoffs he still gets a high salary, but then when you start making the playoffs his salary is gonna balloon and push you over the salary cap.
