Feel free to definitely it in your own words: what a major city offers lifestyle wise, or size wise, or you can name the cities you think are major in contrast to cities that aren't...

I'm trying to get a scope on what a majority black community calls "major"...

Also, are "big city" and "major city" synonymous to you?

You classifying municipalities or metro areas?

I'm going to say metro areas more than 3 million people. Because there's a couple places people swear are big cities, but the city themselves isn't that big; like Atlanta or DC.

So "major" and "big" are different to you? You'd consider Atlanta and DC "major cities", but not "big cities"?

And yes for me personally, I weigh a city's size based on its metro area because the size of a metro area give more of an illustration of a city's reach; a city's influence doesn't start nor stop at the city limit borders...

I think major is a center of influence beyond it's immediate region. Miami, Atlanta, DC, Denver, Boston, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Austin, New Orleans, etc can all be considered major cities even though they aren't BIG cities.

Well I guess Miami, ATL and DC are BIG if you consider the metro.

Any city with a population of 500k+. Any city that is a hub for business, commerce, or influential culture, regardless of population.

Now, being a major city doesn’t make it an Alpha City or a bustling metropolis. Alpha Cities would include places like NYC, LA, Tokyo, Mexico City.

There are cities that don't hit 500,000 that are hubs fir the categories you mentioned. What do you call those cities?

To me, Major city is Miami. Big city is Jacksonville. Major signifies a lifestyle or culture shock. You enter the city and shyt is immediately recognized as “different”
I’m actually from south Florida and ended up working in Jacksonville for 2 years. Miami obviously gets more fanfare but Duval is ridiculously HUGE :picard:. I’m guessing that’s due to consolidation. My commute was ~45 min and I was still technically within city limits. And it wasn’t because of traffic.

Combination of population + cultural impact + financial impact

It can change with time too, Detroit was once a major city but I feel like it's not anymore. Phoenix is now a major city after being an afterthought really, Atlanta is smaller than Detroit with less people but is a major city due to cultural impact

That’s what I meant. Id consider those “major cities” too. Cities like Colorado Springs, Amarillo, Lubbock, Grand Rapids, Yuma, Las Cruces. Regardless of population, those cities hold weight.

Those are not Alpha Cities, by any means though.
