if you a 9-to-5er you a nobody...stuntin' is a must and at all costs...if you not stuntin' you might as well kill ya'self...that's pretty much the culture...

That is corporate rap music that fukked up the minds of many. The illegal/ fast money is dried up and that aspect of culture is dying as well.
And if you think about it, we've been pushed out of other areas where we could dominate minus sports. There aren't enough of us in politics or enough of us who PAY ATTENTION to politics to really make our voices be heard, we've been pushed off of national tv as far as tv shows go as well. Think back to when Good Times was on a big network, along with The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son..then you had Amen, The Cosby Show, A Different World, Fresh Prince, Martin, Living Single, New York Undercover, Out all Night (Patti Labelle, Vivica Fox, Duane Martin, Morris Chestnut) and several other shows that starred US. These shows were on ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS. Now? We got a couple Tyler Perry shows on TBS, one on Nickelodeon and a couple on BET.

Post 2006 (When "Everyone Hates Chris" got cancelled), black culture been on the ropes. Since that Rockstar clothing era started, our movies, fashion, and slang been dictated by corporate execs and we been marginalized ever since.

Um...how is that African culture when every culture has all the things mentioned above?

His post didn't say it was exclusive to african american culture just what was similar and different between hip hop and african american culture.

FIRST OFF:

There are levels to this culture thing. For instance, we have
american culture: which deals with independence, chasing finances, equality, religious freedom, free speech, conspicuous consumption, eating heavy foods, etc...
black american culture: which deals with strong religious influence, focus on music, focus on appearances, disregard for the man/law, etc etc
corporate culture: which deals with the way you interact at work, for that particular company
hip hop culture: whatever that is...

In NO way can we compare hip hop culture to say jewish culture... because they are two totally different scopes of culture, one is a musical subculture dating 40 years, the other is a ethnic religious culture dating maybe 4000 years.

Want to clear that up first and foremost because this thread seems to be derailed discussing elements which cannot meaningfully be compared.

Yea basically what he said. Hip hop culture is weak. It's more of a sub culture and even now blacks can't claim it. Kind of how every race freely says "nikka" because its hip hop. I'm fine with everyone adopting today's "hip hop" culture (Justin bieber, Miley Cyrus etc..) it nothing to be that proud of anyways.

But if you wanna know one thing about African American culture it's that we're divided (unless we are doing the "electric slide" or something) But that's not much of a culture, actually the opposite of it.:manny:

I'll tell you what was real black culture, what the Black panthers were trying to do back in the day.
Now they were unified. The FBI had to shut that down.... Brehs:ld:

Does Hip hop even have the elements to constitute as a culture??? Or simply a mere music genre that we follow and listen to?

There are 4 elements to hip-hop culture:

1. Rap Music
2. Turntablism
3. Breaking
4. Graffiti

Each element is part of a whole experience that affects different senses to stimulate creativity either orally, aurally, physically and/or visually.

And that rock star clothing isn't our culture but most don't care

Um...how is that African culture when every culture has all the things mentioned above?
because African culture has its own traditions and processes and leads to hip-hop is

African culture -> regional/sect/dialect culture -> black america culture -> slave culture & rebellion -> hip-hop culture

you dont want to acknowledge african culture for what it is?

I don't think it's easy to identify black culture because we haven't always been united as a people and in truth we still aren't. Within black communities, we have different sects and those sects act a certain way and sometimes even look cross-eyed at the other sects for not acting a certain way. Some who live in the inner city may look funny at those raised in the burbs and vice versa. Then we have the older generation who may look down on the younger generation or try to teach them a thing or two but then you have the younger generation that doesn't want to acknowledge the older generation. Then there's the whole "lightskin vs darkskin" madness...Not all of us jump the broom at weddings, not all of us worship the same and not all of us live the same. The ONE thing we can look at as ours is the music we've created. specifically jazz, blues and hip hop, but when is the last time anyone mentioned jazz or the blues and sad to say, hip hop doesn't belong to us anymore.
:snoop:
no, just no. hip hop is African American culture and will continue to be that way; white people can't rap about a struggle in the streets selling dope to support there family living in poverty, nor can they rap about the discrimination when getting a job. nikkas own hip hop. :stopitslime:

Breh, I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm saying that from a business standpoint, from an influence standpoint, it's not ours anymore. Most dudes in this generation of MCs don't rap about the struggle anymore and definitely not on a mainstream level. The "struggle" to them is finding which chick to wife, clothes that don't match and being too broke to afford the aston but rich enough to afford popping bottles at the club
