Putin appeals to a group of people who are a lot harder and live rougher lives.
Russia has a more complex history AND GEOGRAPHY that has to deal with all sorts of violent ethnic conflicts.

You gotta remember that there are entirely different types of government in the world and they totally work for other people.
This country was FOUNDED on rebellion and a separation of "power" so any attempt to even go back to what dominates in europe (most top european nations still have kings and shyt) is a major step back for us.
We're unique in that aspect to the point that most nations who try to re do the whole democracy thing TRY really hard to follow what we have going on.
Americans would definitely hate it. We're too diverse of a country and we lack a real storied and fabled history like these places that were run like opulent nation states...constantly warring and taking each other over.
We have a massive nation with water on 3 sides and two feckless neighbors...WE MADE IT!
