No doubt they were shocked but I don't think it's anything to worry about since the Scorpio's price tag will probably be at least 500, so it won't matter.
Market has spoken on consoles. Anything more than 4 hunnid is suicide. Only Sony was able to "recover" from that with the PS3 due to the strength of the Playstation Brand worldwide, others don't have that luxury.
So as far as this thread is concerned, I think they are doing the right thing with VR and the NEO. Mid gen upgrades are here to stay, but the PS Brand is arguably stronger than it's ever been.
VR will be a nice to have. I'm gonna fukk with it though. If it sucks, I'll just return it.

While I do believe that PSVR will be more "successful" than Vive and OR it'll still be niche. If they are comfortable with it being the best/most successful niche platform then it's a win.
