They say if you have enough money or common sense you could make it in the game

up and comers can post their own links online and offline amongst other things

taste makers or A&R's are dying out

so what does a manager actually do these days?

what's the difference between 80's/90's/early 2000's and the managers of today

A manager is actually if anything more important now a days, because the labels dont really do anything for an artist until they are well established. There is a huge difference between a manager, and just someone with business sense. A person with business sense can become a good manager after like 5-10 years. A manager has business sense PLUS experience. Who wants to waste 5-10 years making all the mistakes a smart person will make learning the ins and outs of the industry when they dont have to.

ok ok i see what you guys are saying, now lets say a rapper/beat maker can worm his way through being kool with dj's and certain radio people, essentially they could help them self even if someone offers to be their manager?

Dude anyone could be a manager. On paper. The problem is it is work. Lets take the role of an artist. He has to at a minimum do the following.

1) Practice his craft, be it producing/rapping/instrument playing. an artist should be doing at least 2-4 hours a day practice JUST to stay on top of their skills. Especially if you play live instruments.
2) Should be creating new material. Now a days a hip hop artist average at a new mixtape every 3 months. Thats lets say a new album quality song every week. To make a worthy song you probably make 2 or 3 and the rest end up rejected thrown away. This is different from practicing. This is song writing.
3) Should be recording material. In the studio, or wherever, doing the multiple takes necessary to fully realize the song. This isnt song writing it is recording. This isnt say a verse once and then go home. This record it, do enough takes, sit with the producer to see his vision of how you should spit it. compare the various mixes that are good quality but provide different impact. sit with the engineer getting the mixing right etc. It takes HOURS to record a 3 minute song. This is different from song writing.
4) Should be doing live performances/shows. Common show prep time to completion is 8PM to 1AM. Should be doing Multiple shows a week, especially when trying to establish themselves.
5) Should be doing press/blogs/interviews. Multiple times a week. As much as possible really.
6) Should be touring, even if its not an 'official' tour.

Thats just the basics of what an artist should be doing... you expect to do this professionally thats the minimum. anything less you are wasting your time.

How many hours a week is that? and hours at fukked up schedules, as most shows are at night from 8-1. You gonna do all that and run your business 100%? even if the artist has the natural ability to be a manager they shouldnt be there OWN manager, they should focus on getting the artist sh!t done properly.

I think at the end of the day, what you need to really honestly take home with this is. An artist's manager should be his employee. Some artists are their manager's employee. This is very important when considering whether to sign or not. Be careful what you signing homie. if you can fire someone, then wether they make mistakes or arent a good manager is ok, you can get rid of them if they arent holding their weight. if you put yourself in a situation where you signed away a percentage of yourself for someone to manage you then it really really really is important wether they make mistakes and are a good manager cause you stuck with them forever...

real talk, if you need to ask these kinda questions you definitely do need a manager... but you probably shouldnt be signing anything until you understand the biz better.

some managers can be a power trip just cause they use to handle an artist before this artist

Managers open doors. Nas has doing great recently in part thanks to having very good management. On the other hand I get the impression nobody is really working with the Wu, given how carelessly they blew off their 20yr anniversary.
