I disagree I actually think it stemmed from Mansa Musa and the various Black Moors that were in Iberian Regions.

Quite possible they were prisoners of war keep in mind they were different tribes in Africa. It’s very possible they looked at the captured people as prisoners of war seeing as they were different. The people on west/central/South Africa was probably worshipping one God where as the people that sold them probably saw them as being different since they don’t worship the same diety.
