Being able to guard the pick and roll to read defenses, fight through screens, have awareness, and help defense are parts of your defensive ability.

You aren’t a great defender if you don’t know how to handle screens or properly communicate.

Just say you never played ball.

Pick n roll defense requires the entire team. One guy can play the play perfectly but if your teammate messes up the rotation, the opponents are gonna score. A guy like Kobe would be wasting his skill set guarding a guy who calls for pick n rolls every play. You put guys like Kobe on guys who play one on one.

Lmao what? No? It doesn’t, it gives another option to attack the defense with because a screen doesn’t mean that the defender is immediately out of the play.

Have you ever played basketball? You call a screen when you can't beat your man off the dribble.

Players with weak one on one skills are the ones who play primarily pick n roll ball all the time.

You can’t say Kobe always took the tougher assignment then say he didn’t guard pierce because he was 20 lbs heavier and didn’t guts Ray Allen because he lacks off ball D

My point stands he was a great defender but had help especially during the 2nd title runs

He didn't guard Ray Allen cause all Allen does is run around screens. You don't waste a player like Kobe on a guy who is running around screens.

Artest is built like Pierce which is why he guarded him. Size matters on defense. Its why Iverson never guarded Kobe.

Imagine calling a man an elite defender but he can’t defend against picks or doesn’t know how/like to play off-ball defense

Jordan didn't guard Stockton for that reason. Neither did Pippen. It ain't my fault that you never played basketball and can't understand simple things like this.

Nobody puts an elite defender on a guy who is calling for picks every play because by definition calling for a pick is trying to force a switch.

I don't remember that at all. And the 1997 and 1998 Finals are my earliest NBA memories.

I remember it clearly. One of the biggest storylines going into the series was whether Pippen would defend Stockton bc he was playing at such a high level.

NBA Coaches get fired everyday for being stupid as fukk.

You think Tony Allen is a worse defender than Kobe Bryant?

You think Shane Battier is a worse defender than Kobe Bryant?

You think Andre Igoudala is a worse defender than Kobe Bryant?

You think Bruce Bowen is a worse defender than Kobe Bryant?

You think Ron Artest is a worse defender than Kobe Bryant?

:mjlol: Nobody seriously talk about Kobe Bryant being some lockdown defender. Nobody puts him up there with the GOATs. This man ain't Kawhi, this man ain't Tony Allen, this man ain't Scottie Pippen, this man ain't Ron Artest, this man ain't Michael Jordan.

Guys that actually locked dudes up night in and night out as their fukking job. Kobe Bryant guards somebody for 4 minutes and people think he is a great defender. Kobe stopped playing defense after Shaq left.:stopitslime:

This is what his own coach said about his defense

  • “Kobe’s defense, to be accurate, has faltered in recent years, despite his presence on the league’s all-defensive team. The voters have been seduced by his remarkable athleticism and spectacular steals, but he hasn’t played sound, fundamental defense.

  • "Mesmerized by the ball, he’s gambled too frequently, putting us out of position, forcing rotations that leave a man wide open, and doesn’t keep his feet on the ground.”

Tony Allen and Bruce Bowen weren't great defenders, they were pesky defenders. They didn't shut people down, just were annoying. Shane Battier was a solid defender, but not great. Iggy tough tho, Ron Ron tough...but Kobe was a better defender than them both. Hell, Joe D was a better defender than Battier.

I don't see AK47 or Matrix on these lists. Moncrief wasn't on enough lists, but most are too young to remember him.

B Diddy, Mookie Blaylock, Eddie Jones, Deke
