To me it's a chicken and egg thing, rappers stared putting out garbage albums, really focusing on singles, albums looked like industry compilations, etc. so why buy the album if artists aren't making solid projects? shyt is just one big back and forth

I feel u but its been albums that were very good to come out and nikkas didn't support. Like nas album life is good, I felt like that was very strong album but after the first week the number have been super underwhelming and majority of this board is nas Stan's but I can bet most of them nikkas just downloaded it. It's been music that people have been enjoying I hear nikkas riding to nikkas shyt all the time, if u can ride 2 a nikkas album for months why not buy that bytch. I'm not saying just spend your money on everything that drops tho. And I think once nikkas really started downloading before folks were just dropping singles, I remember when grodt was doing crazy ass numbers and they said either on MTV or bet that they believe it had been download illegally like 4 times as much that's crazy 2 me.

I feel you, part of it is generational as well, I don't know how old you are, but I know I'm part of the last generation to really be about buying music when it came out, so because that was the norm, I don't mind copping albums that are worth it. But a lot of these cats 23/24 and under came up in the download era so regardless of how good an album is, they simply don't feel like they should need to pay for it.

There is no one reason why hip hop is not in the same place that it was about 10 to 15 years ago. From artists not having longevity to being able to get music on the internet anytime you want to all the trend hopping and artists using the same producer just because they are hot at the moment. All of this and more has to factor in to why hip hop is not thriving like it once was. But at the same time there is still good music being made by some artists. And while it will never be like it was in the early to mid 90's hip hop is here to stay and isn't going anywhere.

Not directed to me, but you can't assume black people don't go to shows. I got to a lot of concerts as they're one of my favorite events and if it's a black artist, minus expensive festivals, the crowds are mostly black (tho some are a little more mixed when I'm home in the bay simply due to the area demographics) I buy albums of artists I truly like or when I hear a record that I believe should be purchased. Lastly, you also can't blame people for not going to shows, a good 80% of mainstream and mixtape rappers suck, these dudes have no showmanship, why pay $50 to see a nikka drunk and high as fukk stand on stage walking back and forth, got like 6 other dudes up there with him, etc.

CDs purchased: nas LIG, Yeezus :snoop:, born sinner, chrisette Michele better, Kendrick, Elle Varner, Ab soul long term, some schoolboy q singles

Concerts: nas, jigga & JT next week, new edition, watch the throne, rock the bells this fall, secret kanye/good music concert, jeezy, Madonna

good shyt.. Ive seen them alot..

Lack of balance...which was ushered in by the trap/crunk storming of the game.
Sampling, or lack of.
The Internet.

yup, sampling laws fukked up the east coast beyond repair. Like someone said here, the south had developed their own sound without the use of samples and dominated the clubs and radio. Plus dudes rather get with a big booty hoe in the strip club than mean mugging in some cold street corner in the wintertime.

In Dallas, From Cleveland
Free Mixtapes + Internet Leaks + Radio Payola

Especially when they started making mixtapes using original beats...

If you just gave me a free mixtape with 20 songs, why would I be motivated to pay $14.99 for Album that probably has 14 songs that are probably not as good as the free mixtape you made?

Hiphop died because today's rappers have no real message in the songs. After Tupac died that's what hip hop died.

People don't even want to listen to the radio station anymore.

What killed hiphop? I dont think hiphop is dead (yet) it's somewhat struggling but has picked up since the Drake, Wale, J. Cole class showed up. The shyt was on LIFE SUPPORT around 2009/2010 with all those dance crazes and gimmicks poppin up every fukkin week.

The crunk/snap era of the south really did damage. New York falling off and not really having an identity considering it's the "mecca" of hiphop did some damage. Rappers treating it like a hustle and throwing out fastfood music did some damage. Producers and their race to the bottom selling $20 beats did some damage as well.

Technology fukked alot of things up, it made any nikka with a laptop and mic become a "rapper" and/or "producer". It made it alot easier to just throw music out there and hope it sticks.

But overall I think it's recovering. Right now the biggest issue is ppl just not letting rappers rock and do their thing. Rappers are too quick to crown themselves and want to be considered greats w/o it happening naturally. Media outlets are too quick to say such and such is the next ____. As great as Kendrick is, that whole coronation thing is kind of whack, I like that those West artist support him but the nikka only got one album out, let that nikka live out his legacy. J. Cole w/ da whole "Let Nas down" thing and Wale and his constant tryna compare himself as being on the same respect level as a Jay..all that shyt is corny to me. nikkas need to just make dope music and let all that other shyt come naturally.
