What Makes a super team in the NBA?

This is a real question...is it two great players on the same team? or three or a bunch of really good players not hall of fame types on one team?...because would the 80's lakers or the 80's celtics or that 76's team with Doc and moses?

the term was created by casual basketball fans after the Big 3 got together in Miami... all they knew was that Lebron and Wade were on the same team, and they also got some guy named Bosh who was good in Toronto... I never heard that phrase used to describe the Celtics big 3, the stacked Bulls' teams, the Lakers or Celtics in the 80's, etc.


It's a misnomer really, the only "super team" I can think of is those Bill Russell led teams back in the day that had like 8 Hall of Famers on one squad... but as far as modern day basketball is concerned, the way the league is now, you NEED to have a stacked team to win multiple championships (Hakeem's Houston teams being the lone exception)

I don't necessarily disagree w/ you but I would add Detroit in there as the exception of winning the ship. That team was fundamentally sound w/o one hall of famer on it. (Billups, Hamilton, etc...)

But I suppose putting together 3 elite or almost elite level guys, some shooters and some defenders a super team makes. If the Nets get Dwight you'd have to consider them a super team if they put together the right supporting cast. Deron is easily top of the pg bracket, Dwight depending on that back will still be a dominant C and JJ catches tons of hate but he is deadly at that 2 spot.

This super team crap is a joke tho, these teams wouldn't touch the older dominant NBA teams tho

Depends on the league at the time. Bulls of Jordan/Pippen/Rodman were a superteam in their era. Even Shaq/Kobe Lakers were one based upon their comp. I don't see how the Heat can be considered one now when you have the OKC, the Lakers, the Celtics, and maybe the Nets. 80's teams weren't referenced as superteams because

A) people weren't mad about stars playing together back then
B) you had multiple teams full of stars competeing fo the title

B) is true today. A) however is not and that is why you hear so much about superteams.

I think the main element in defining a super team is how the players come together and actually form the team with intention to win a title quickly/solve a problem, like some basketball type of Avengers. Thats what's going on now.

What team has ever tried to win a title slowly? Teams have always tried to make moves that would put them in position to win as quickly as possible.

As far as the Pistons go none of them were superstars but they were all very good players that fit perfectly together. To say they weren't good invidually is false.
