I don't want my fridge to have a camera or Wi-Fi. I don't want my dishwasher to be smart. I don't want my washing machine to text me.
In fact, I kinda miss knobs and dials and knowing big appliances would last 20 years and could still be repaired.

And a lot of those internet appliances aren't properly secured so they provide an endpoint for crackers to infiltrate your network. And even if the smart nonsense doesn't get hacked, it'll still stop working anyway because the manufacturer shut down the DRM servers.

Ann Aguirre @annaguirre.bsky.social
That's another issue.

Tavernstories/Clunch @tavernstories.bsky.social
I so agree

I don't want cameras or wi-fi on anything but my phone and pcs.

C@ Wilson @copycat21c.bsky.social
Absolutely! Esp the “big ticket item means it would last more than a decade and could be repaired” bit.

I discovered the value of having a notice sent to my phone showing how long was left on the DW, when I ended up with a builder selected DW that has no controls visible when the door is shut. Just a light to let you know it’s running…

I like buying stuff with a ten year guarantee that does what it says on the tin. I don't want a fridge that re orders or a chatty washing machine.

Having my washer text me saves me tons of time and rewashes. To each their own!

I'd pay extra for built to last with easily replaceable parts. Unfortunately the consumerist capitalist model demands everything is disposable with a 3 to 5 year life span.

Planned obsolescence is a pain in the arse!

whatcov.bsky.social @whatcov.bsky.social
Same, I don’t want self-driving cars, AI schedulers or smart meters. Off grid sounds more appealing by the day.

Exactly!

Fish Lady Abs @fishladyabs.bsky.social
I feel you, I just shelled out 500 bucks to have a vacuum cleaner like my parents had.
It still works, I just live too far away.

isoma @isoma.bsky.social
I don't want my laundry machine to text me but it'd be lovely if it knew to run when electricity is cheap.
And no I don't want to pay 300% of the price of a normal machine to make this happen.

Citizen Ann @citizenann.bsky.social
Sadly no money to be made on this. All the gizmos can be marketed as making something 'sophisticated'/smart etc and advertised with peeps dancing about in a carefree manner. AND they have built in obsolesce, which means they are not designed to last much beyond a few years.

Sorry to ask for help but I want to get out of Ga*za ple/ase save us from death we are hungry too

All of this.

Ann Aguirre @annaguirre.bsky.social
I find that things with computer chips don't last that long in a humid kitchen environment too. Which is why I have an old fashioned crockpot and rice cooker.
19/20

Sandra Schwab @scribblingsandy.bsky.social
My rice cooker is small and super simple. Does the job very well.

Ann Aguirre @annaguirre.bsky.social
Same. It has a cook / warm lever.
