What started the shift from simple rhymes (BusyBee/Run DMC) 2 the advanced lyricism of the late 80s?

Melle Mel was lyrical but Rakim was from another planet lyrical

I think LL Cool J was the stepping stone between Melle Mel and Rakim

Like Fat Joe and Funk Flex was saying LL Cool J was the only rapper that had a moment with no competition when he came out in 85

So I would say LL Cool J was the start of a shift in hip hop... LL was the first to study the battle prowes of Kool Moe Dee, the flow of Silver Fox and Moe Dee, the Witiness of Grandmaster Caz, and lyrics of Melle Mel and combine all those to make a style of his own..

Rakim did it next and took it to another Planet
