So I'm in a situation where I don't know what to do.

I was working at my previous job where it was around 55-60 hours a week, 6-7 days a week, high stress job, salary is $120k, with no benefits (which doesn't technically matter since my fiance gets full benefits and I will be covered through her plan), work in the office.

I'm now working at a govt job for the past 9 months that is in a related field, hours are 40 hours, 5 days a week, salary is $60k, with full benefits, wfh and very little stress.

The previous job was a family business and I'm thinking of going back solely because of the pay. Issue is I just don't know what to do. I enjoy my new job, but I feel as though I'm missing a lot in terms of my pay. But working 40 hours a week from home and having so much free time is great.

The way I see it, its either work longer hours with more pay and poor work-life balance, or work less hours with less pay and better work-life balance. So its money vs work-life balance.

Basically, I don't know if I should go back or whether I should stick with my current job. Any ideas?

You left the first job for a reason, right?

yea, because of the hours and the stress. and i know if I go back, the hours and stress is going to be the same.

i just feel like I should do more now since I'm still young and try to stack as much as I can

While you are young is the time you’re supposed to figure out the best place to stack.

Don't ever underestimate the luxury of working from home.
This pandemic has been the best thing to ever happen to my business.
My 9-5 was forced to permanently shift the majority of the staff to remote work.
This has allowed me to devote the bulk of my time to growing my business while still getting a full salary and benefits from my "day job".
Find yourself a side hustle to make up the money you're missing out on.
Don't go back to a standard desk job if at all possible. You're sanity and family peace is worth way more than any amount of money.

Lies. That's what they want you to believe but its possible to make good money and not kill yourself working. Have you asked your current place for a raise?

7 days a week is an automatic no. You can also try and find some separate strings of income since you'll be working from home with the other job.

Keep with the government job I’m assuming it’s a GS job after the first year probation period your set if you wanna go for 20. Great work life balance you can always do great things outside of work in your free time. You work from home so that’s always a plus you have a lot of options. Hell I know people working 2 remote full time jobs straight cheating the system but fukk it if you can do it do it.

What has your wife said?

Are your finances in order?

How much have you two had to sacrifice since the pay cut?

Is she happier now that you two have more time together?

There are remote jobs that will pay more. I’m not sure your field, but even as much as $120k. Don’t go back, move forward, and where you are now isn’t the final destination.

no doubt, and what you're saying makes sense. one of the reasons I'm bringing this up now is that my brother will be closing on his first rental property in the next few months. I can't do that yet, I don't have as much disposable income to save every month compared to him with the pay cut. So sometimes I think maybe go back, grind it out for a few years, save up, and at least be able to buy a couple of rental properties down the line.

Lies. That's what they want you to believe but its possible to make good money and not kill yourself working. Have you asked your current place for a raise?

Not gonna happen breh, its a govt job, they have strict timelines for raises, its 2% yearly, thats it.

She wants me to stay at the current job, we have a lot more free time together, she says she has noticed I'm less stressed, happier, etc. Honestly, almost everyone I've talked to in my personal life has said its better to stay at the current job, other than my dad and brother, who want me to come back.

In terms of sacrifice, not much day to day, we aren't struggling or anything like that. But overall, obv. being able to do something like buying properties to rent out is going to be a lot harder moving forward if I stick with this job.

Breh, if you work for the Gov't., you're SET. Don't worry too much about raises, look to promotions. The Fed will finance your education as if you were Enlisted and the benefits........ you can't beat them. My parents both worked and retired from Fed jobs almost 30 years ago and never had to work again.
