If he hadn't have made up the story about getting shot he might have been alright. There were already multiple respected white acts in Hip Hop at that point. He actually set white rappers back a little bit with that

I was like in the second grade, so I only had like 3-4 tapes. Yes, tapes!

LL's Mama Said Knock You Out, Heavy D's Big Tyme, Special Ed's Youngest in Charge and Kane's It's a Big Daddy Thing. I remember House being HUGE in NY around that time! C&C Music Factory and all that type of shyt.

So music was mad diverse. I didn't really have any issue with Vanilla Ice, just didn't care. I thought he was corny, but there were tons of songs out like that back then. You just let them ride, it was whatever. I never went out of my way to express how much I hated a song. Even back then as a kid. I do remember dude bein' mad nice with "the runnin' man" though. LOL!!

Everybody was excited because this new White rappa could actually dance and had an extremely catchy tune. Lyrics was simple and catchy. Dude stood out and came with the perfect video.

Cats was going crazy. Even my sister bought the record. haha. mu father would play that song years later in car coming back from a family outing really loud and we were all embrassed!! Then somehow Vanilla Ice became extremely wack as he became exposed :laff:

I thought it was aredundant dance rap track by a BLACK ARTIST.....cause it was getting regular rotation on my local black statio n at the time.....even made the top 5 at 5 in the afternoon, so it was a certified hit....

till i saw the video and was like..........hmmmmm he's a white boy :whoo:

i don't think the BACKLASH against VANILLA ICE came till the videos and interviews came out and people just saw how lame as well as arrogant he came across especially after the Ques (omega psi phi) called him out for "stealing" thier catch phrase "ice ice baby....".....

and black artists and activists in general whom looked at him as a "culture vulture"......

IMAGE IS EVERYTHING :lupe:

I think it was the Alphas who called him out, fam'. Then again I was only three at the time.lol.

fukking classic....regardless of how it all played out, you frontin if you weren't dancing to that shyt, especially if you were a young dude, I still bump it for nostalgic purposes.

All I remember was dude was gettin loose than a muthafukka in the video.

Arsenio exposed him without even trying really, couldn't even enjoy his shyt in public after that, it took me years of therapy to even come into an actual space to admit that I was even jammin that shyt...

I always wonder what would have happened if he hadn't played himself, Hammer woulda ended up puttin a hit out on his ass too for taking his fans :pachaha:
