i was in 5th grade & loved it for about 2 weeks. everyone around that age kinda liked it in a jokey way.

i think rap in general at the time was way less uptight. alot of the songs around that time were just about fun (kid n play, monie in the middle, etc)

Look, "Ice, Ice, Baby" is a Classic Rap song. Yes Vanilla Ice was a gimmicky by the record companies and it worked for that 1st album. But I remember the song was huge, especially for young kids at that time. Look the lyrics were good, Had a nice flow to it. The beat is Classic sample from David Bowie and Queen. It actually holds the record being the 1st #1 Hip Hop single by a solo artist. So I can't lie, I grew up on the song so I still do like it but that doesn't mean I know he wasn't corny which is why his 2nd album Flop. I remember seeing him in Ninja Turtles and thinking it was wack even back then. Hammer had more talent and more originality.

I was living close to Dallas at the time (Garland) which is where Ice is from so the song was pretty big at the time based on some home pride ish. It was just a cool song. I just remember some people would have the tape at school. All of the controversy didn't come until later on. Before that it was just a tight song and no one cared about anything else. I remember the album selling like crazy to. All this other rah rah that people be kickin' isn't really fair to him. He did sell out as he even admitted but it wasn't until later on. That has nothing to do with that song or album though. If you want to be real with it he was probably exploited just like everyone else in the game, except for different reasons.

It's good people are mentioning Hammer because the success Ice had was very similar to Can't Touch This. Even Tone Loc with Wild Thing or Young Mc with Bust a Move as far as big rap songs that the country jumped on and accepted like never before. Truth be told Ice Ice Baby was big for Hip Hop because it reached places where Hip Hop wasn't at prior or where Hip Hop wasn't excepted at. The song is hated on because he's white and he's not from Ny.

The nail in the coffin (from my point of view I mean, as far as why everyone in school turned on him) was lying about being from Miami and knowing Luke. I think he said they went to school together or some shyt.

One kid came to school talking about there was an interview of Luke going in on Vanilla Ice. Everyone was :usure: at first because it sounded random as hell. You couldn't go home back then and Google shyt.

Prior to that it wasn't like anyone my age thought he was the man or anything. It was more like :ehh: "he can dance, that's a catchy song". After the Luke shyt it was just a nonstop parade of Ls from all sides. Obviously he continued to sell records but hip-hop went from being :ld: about him to :childplease: damn near over night.

fukking classic....regardless of how it all played out, you frontin if you weren't dancing to that shyt, especially if you were a young dude, I still bump it for nostalgic purposes.

All I remember was dude was gettin loose than a muthafukka in the video.

Arsenio exposed him without even trying really, couldn't even enjoy his shyt in public after that, it took me years of therapy to even come into an actual space to admit that I was even jammin that shyt...

I always wonder what would have happened if he hadn't played himself, Hammer woulda ended up puttin a hit out on his ass too for taking his fans :pachaha:

I was a MC Hammer fan :stylin: so I didn't fukk with Vanilla.

Back then in elementary you were either with Hammer or Vanilla... it was like Pac vs. Big, Jay vs. Nas back then for real.
