Oh yes i’m WELL aware of Tru Life and the havoc he wrecked on Dip Set during that time. Dude was like a hunting dog during that time period lol. Too bad he never got an album out of it but that was partly his fault for not being able to stay out of trouble. There was a rumor that he had a song for his album called New New York that had verses from both Jay and Nas on it. That would have been a MAJOR look for him.
Yeah I heard the same thing nas and jay on the album and snoop was executive producing the album I was like damn ppl really love this guy and I don’t think he was just bullying rappers I think some ppl genuinely liked him he had fire interviews shyt talking segments I had homies that reminded me of him you meet em they be cool as fukk funny always have chicks with them could pull bad chicks but god damn when the switch gets flipped it’s like there a pitbull they ain’t backing down from anything and when you see that your definitely glad your friends with them and you don’t ever wanna be on there bad side and not to speak down on nobody but if they don’t somehow become a born Christian there’s only two things that happen and tru life doing 10 is better than the other option because he still looks hella young and he could def give some youngsters some game and advice and I think future was fukking with him after an interview I seen of him 3 years ago

Jay is a master marketer. He is the one who coined the idea/comparison of rappers ‘retiring’ as if it’s sports. But it doesn’t even make sense. Not only for obvious reasons but also there was only 3 years between Black Album and Kingdom Come. To put that in perspective, Nas went 3 years between It was written and I am. It only felt like such a gap bc of the hype and the very big push on going ‘corporate’ (which I’m retrospect was a good luck for the culture)

To answer your question it was a bigger deal when jay retired and we thought we’d never hear him rap again. By the time he came back, he had dropped plenty music

People have e mentioned the features, but a low key forgotten aspect is the 2nd R Kelly album ‘Unfinished Business’ dropped in 2004. It was a terrible album, but it is a full 11 song jay z album with 2 singles that were on radio.

So ultimately you had: Black album November ‘03, Unfinished Business October ‘04, features (Go Crazy, ‘05), Grammy family freestyle summer ‘06 ….November ‘06 Kingdom Come

He technically only ’missed’ 1 album cycle, ‘05.
Master P did it first

No he didn’t, Too Short announced his retirement on album #10 back in 96. Jay sharked that as he tends to do…P too

Reading this whole thread brought back memories :wow:

It was really the worst kept secret cause it seemed like everybody within the industry knew Hov was gonna drop another album.

He dropped a handful of features, loosies, and freestyles. Folks just looked at Hov like “Sure nikka you ain’t retired..:stopitslime:

I also remember them XXL articles where they said that Dre was very hands on with the album. But then the album dropped and he only produced and mixed a few records :unimpressed:

The album had ALOT of hype..and it take a while for folks to realize that the album was mid. However by the time that happened Hov came back with “American Gangster.”

I think not being around that core roc group prolly took some time to get used too aswell cause I could imagine hearing the best from state prop rap and jay being hella inspired beans freeway peedi young Chris if all them dudes is rapping to you showing you songs your gonna be more in the groove of spitting some hard shyt I’m not saying that “whisper flow” thing but if u rap with ppl sooo much shyt rubs off and a hungry just blaze and Kanye west producing bp bp 2 and the black album where prolly effortless compared to stopping for 3 years coming back dame gone state prop broken/braking up dip set gone (I know he didn’t get along with them but still that toxic work environment can still be productive for hard street rap) just blaze is there but he’s building Saigon up Kanye one album away from beating 50 cent and being a world unto himself so who was jay getting that inspiration from? And shyt might’ve required him to venture outside his circle because the roc in 03 is worlds apart in 06

I remember the hype being ridiculous and then kind of let down by the album.

“International Hov” had a lot of younger acts to compete with and people weren’t really feeling the luxury raps like that.

Jay came back with American Gangster to restore his credibility. Still one of my favorite rap albums. :wow:

Schooling people takes forever; don't bother
=== some shyt i forgot to mention, added to the original post for the continuity of the reference links, written above this page break, click to page jump over there ===
do people just want the nostalgic trip or were they too young to remember? I was under the assumption that everyone on the coli was old enough to remember given that jay's 'coming back from retirement build up' from 2005-07 was still relatively recent given that we have a lot of old heads on this forum of them remembering when wu-tang or 2pac first came out, etc

I just write everything as-is without much spin on it - i didn't know people craved the excruciating details on all the A, B, and C plot tangents of how all the side characters came into play into all of this. searching the forums, holy shyt is there a lot of these "what was it like when" threads in the booth, lmao

Bump them if you want to know and have people fill in the random tangential details to the main story, I guess.

never forget he came out of retirement because of Jim Jones, New City's Ryderman was the most popular rapper in the city and was running around like he was Pac

the best thing to come out of the roll out was the Grammy Family freestyle.. now thats classic.
