This album had a lot of skits and.... it's considered a classic.

skits usually help tell a story and help move the album along transitioning from one song to the next.

This is exactly the album I thought of when reading through the thread. Skits are crucial in making the world building of an album. They set the tone and helps tell the story more, something you may not be able to do in two to three 16-bar verses and hook.

I think more rap albums should have skits, but most albums aren't conceptual enough and I'm not sure if a lot of rappers now can craft an album to do something like that. You essentially have to write the entire concept down on paper and form it out. Skits definitely need to make a comeback.

Masta ace kinda mastered the use of skits to add meaning to the album. I do agree sometimes it's so lame it's a waste of time

I liked how obcl/early wu albums had them as a part of the tracks and they were all good. I usually skip skits tho on any other albums or just straight up delete them.

OP is a fool that doesn't understand and appreciate hip hop. "Weird obsession"? You could've just said, "how come hip hop albums after the 90's had skits?"

Your ignorance screams through because just rephrasing the question instead of making a judgement would have allowed you to learn:

  • It made hip hop albums more cohesive and compelling from a story telling standpoint
  • People used skits through the 2000's and still do today (e.g.Carter V)
  • It added personality to artists who had limited options to do so otherwise
  • It helped change the pace and transition from one topic/song to another
