Music tends to go in cycles. I can’t speak on the pre-60s, but in the 60s (Motown era), you had great music, but it was about having a formula to make sure the song became a hit. In the 70s, it seems as though artists wanted more creative freedom, and you had an explosion of different types of music. In the 80s, it seems like it went back to being focused on hit making. In the late 80s-90s with rap exploding, you saw the creativity come back. Rappers had their own paths. After that, when rap became the highest selling genre, it was all about the hits again.
