One of the biggest things I miss about the 60s, 70s, and early 80s era was the musicianship. Those cats really knew how to write and play.
If we're keeping it a buck, most of the really good stuff from the 90s and beyond was really just sampled from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and early 80s.

Nobody's going to remember all these no-name mumble rappers in 10 years.

But Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Motown, Marvin Gaye, P-Funk, Minnie Riperton, Donny Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Zapp & Roger, and the Isley Brothers?

Now THAT'S timeless music right there :wow:

Mid to late 20th century was probably the best run across genres. From a purely technical standpoint I'd say Jazz from like 1920s - 1970s was the peak of Black music because you had GOAT musical geniuses like Coltrane, Davis, Mingus, etc, etc. For entertaining performers (MJ, James Brown, Prince, etc) probably the 1960s-1990s. Best singers were 1940s-1990s.

1920-55ish jazz took hold of America in ways that I don’t even think Hip Hop has. There was a point when Jazz music was the soundtrack of everything America black or white. People would sit down for a eugenics meeting and then go watch a Duke Ellington show.

Hahlem baby, hahlem!
