What was the biggest reason for the drop off sales wise between Diddy’s 1st and 2nd albums?

And just a couple months prior, you could kinda see where this was headed with Mase's 2nd album... packed with the type of beats that absolutely would've been right up radio's alley in late-'97, here we were in mid-'99 and that shyt sounded so out of place. That single/video "Get Ready" with the Shalamar sample is 100% a hit IF it was '97 but in '99 it was like "this nikka serious?" It's like Bad Boy was ahead of the curve and setting trends for a while, and then they got so big, Puff ended up stuck in that trend and forgot to keep doing new shyt.

absolutely. Being around 13 in 1999, gave me that unique perspective of having Mase be my favorite rapper, was trying to wear jerseys to look like him on the cover of Harlem World, in 199/1998/1999, and then not

1. Not really believing that he was retiring to become a pastor, because hard to verify things back then

2. By mid 1999 not really caring that my favorite rapper was out, because by then, it was on to Memphis Bleek, Shyne, DMX, Beanie Sigel, Nas, Jadakiss going solo, and so on

3. Also, buying Harlem World : The Movement and not Double Up

A few artists were able to stem the tide of the 90’s though. LL, Redman, Gangstarr to name a few.

The grandiosity and meglomania of talking about Jesus Christ as his own personal best friend in the first person singular is hilarious

The very next track, is actually a pretty raw record with BIG and Kim, and Puff detailing torturing a murdering a man for kilos lol

now that i think about it, he tried to remake another "i'll be missing you" with "Best friend" thinking it'll do the same numbers :heh:

Nah, before Puff dropped Forever, he was supposed to be making a Gospel album called Thank You. That whole project was scrapped and he recorded Forever. Given the Winans background in Gospel, "Best Friend" is likely a song from the Thank You sessions.

Damn, I had no idea about most of the info about Diddy posted in here. It looks like he was under pressure after Big died and Mase left. It kinda seems like he only started rapping seriously cause all his stars were gone

This makes sense of how aggressive/in your face/thirsty he was in the early 2000s with Sean John, the J Lo relationship, pushing Shyne as a fake Biggie, Loon as a fake Mase, the random tax write off groups like Da Band and Danity Kane, mad songs with whoever was hot at the time…

Son wasn’t going out without a fight
