Death in the flesh? I'm willing to consider that, still doesn't invalidate my original point.

I'm willing to admit a judeo-christian-islamic upbringing could have benefits for living with a standardized societal moral guide, but as far fully committing to the belief system just isn't for me.

Free will can not coexist with omnipotence and omniscience. A truly omnipotent and omniscient being will already know that outcome.

For the record, I'm not full on atheist. I'm probably a deist.

So I gotta cape for the full atheists, let's see, for me what made me abandon religion...
  • Growing up hearing how god was "all around us" but never experiencing any tangible evidence
  • Noticing how the most deplorable people could gain favor in the church community just by getting saved or baptized
  • Years of hearing about rampant sexual abuse by pastors and priests
  • Actually reading the bible and realizing it's as fantastical as GoT or LOTR
  • General living as a black man in America, and learning how our slave ancestors were indoctrinated with religion to be docile
I went to a christian middle school too:russ:

I'll fully admit I look down on religious types as lemmings, but I get it, I'm almost jealous of the fake comfort they get from sending prayers to space Santa. I personally get comfort from knowing that life is a dice roll and some sadistic deity didn't create some of the hard times I've been through.

When I was never able to get a satisfactory answer as to how the logistics of Noah putting every species of animal on the ark would work. :patrice:

For one, two of each isn't enough genetic diversity to repopulate a species. Also, no ark could possibly be big enough to fit that many animals. Plus, what about things like insects? And some of the animals would eat each other I'm sure, how exactly did Noah manage that? And how did he make it to every habitat to even get all these species, and then put them back in an environment where they could survive? How did he feed all these animals? Some of them literally only eat other animals. Did all these animals just somehow get along while they were on an arc? I need answers.

The scientist in me can't rock with that sort of thing. :manny:

if you walk with me, i will show you things

when I say to you, God will reign forever, i mean that which creates you also receives you. And if he can do both, then you should never fear ever again, and lawlessness will be abhorrent to you and wickedness far from your being.

Right now is more complex and wonderous than words can explain
We are living in a world of illusion

Convince me that God is good and worth following and I'll indulge you a little.

I bounce back and forth and try to look at it under multiple lenses; whether or not God is benevolent, whether science proves or disproves the existence, metaphysical congruence ala are spirits real and if so what form and consciousness would they have.

I realize people seemingly have free will and as a result evil can be perpetrated as a result but an all powerful and all knowing entity must know these outcomes, and if he's not looking to prevent it...he can't be good. And if he can't be good, why follow him?

As far as the Bible, I look at it as a book of allegories that borrowed heavily from other mythological texts of the time for some sort of association to help with assimilation. Anyone who takes it for verbatim I'd give the same scrutiny as a schizophrenic.

Convince me that God is evil and not worth following and i'll indulge you a little

:jbhmm: lets just look at those two statements side by side

if the God of Israel created the entire world in just 6 ordinary days. Then the very words he uttered fashioned reality. Meaning reality is made of the spoken word

so if you ask me: "Convince me" you have already created an outcome where your salvation is dependent on me creating an alternate timeline where you surrender to a God you are already unsure of.

So if I rephrase it and say: "That God, Convince me, that you are good and worth following and I'll indulge you a little."

what will that create, within you?

the problem with you puttin the argument up like this is you are challenging me to convince you to cease believing in the most fantastical thing anyone has ever believed, that you have believed for your entire life

atheist lose these arguments because you are trying to convince someone to just breathe seawater once - obviously you aint gonna fukkin do that, you been breathin air your whole life

the most militant atheist will soften up as soon as they lose a parent. having no hope of seeing your loved one again. knowing that your old man is just a pile of ashes in a box. that atheist will shut up and let people have their comforts. i know cuz im that atheist.

i know i will never have that comfort, but never again will i try to take it from nobody. going through the loss of your most important people with nothing to lean on other than your family and your vices. breaks people.

coli militant atheists dont go convertin people, you dont like it when they do it to you

Yeah, even though they won't admit it, I think on some level deep down most people know religion is :duck: but it's comforting for some people and makes them feel better :manny:

As long as they're not bothering me about it I let them rock. I just hate when people act like their religion has some kind of scientific evidence behind it :comeon:

If you’re a true believer it’s supposed to be taken literally.

:francis:

Right
If you don't believe the bible literally....then it's a waste of time reading it. You basically can make it mean whatever you want it to mean, might as well read Aesop Fables and center your life around those fairy tales :mjlol:
