Southern California…
We was kinda late in LA

Death Row was taking off and Snoop was getting ready to dropped his first album a few months later so we was really waiting on that and didn’t give a fukk about anything else

Around my way at that time most of the people I knew were listening to No Limit and Cash Money. I got ā€œteasedā€ for ā€œbeing on some New York shxtā€ for being in to Wu early on. I also adopted the ā€œNew York style of dressingā€ as a teen so that added to it. People messed with Meth but funny enough Ol Dirty was the first one I noticed many people gravitating to. People messed with Only Built album but overall it was a very slow adaptation. It definitely wasn’t until around the double album release that they were really fully accepted. Triumph video played a major role.
Yooo

living down South or in the Midwest at the time was kind of brutal if you listened to ā€œthat East Coast shytā€

nikkas only wanted to listen to No Limit at one point and would give you the :stopitslime: if you put on some NY shyt :russ:

I’m sorry but I’m a little confused by some posts. Wu came out in 92-93. nikkas was already listening to cash money and no limit? Shiny suit era was here in 93?
I'm saying :russ:

By the time Cash Money and No Limit were popping nationwide, Wu was in the middle of their sophomore slump of albums after Forever.

We heard it around 6 months before it went 'mainstream' on the Awesome Two Show and Marley Marl Show on WBAI in the Tri-State. There were a couple other groups that sounded like them at the time, but Wu got more push while the others got embroiled in legal problems and pushed back.

For instance:

This came out BEFORE 'Proteck Ya' Neck.

This sounds dope

but WU just had something extra…it’s almost hard to explain. The king fu shyt maybe.

I think we aren’t necessarily talking about exactly when they came out.

I was still banging WU heavy in 97 ( forever, solo projects) and dudes would act funny.

either way you can substitute any popular southern act and it’s the same.

nikkas was really hating on NY rap and if you had an open ear you got clowned.

Yeah, in Atlanta i didn’t hear about them until the Meth/Mary joint and Mariah/ODB remixThe south had our own shyt with No Limit/So So Def Bass/Miami Bass plus the most popular shyt like PAC and Biggie. I only got into them with Triumph. My bro bought the album but didn’t care much for it. Didn’t really understand the Wu style until later.

But I was still mad young back then

Word. :mjlol:

This is what I hate about some of these fraudulent nggas on this site.

Wu-Tang Forever came out in 97'. That shyt simultaneously aired with Mo' Money, Mo Problems. I can remember both droppin, same time. Even tho Triumph was LEGENDARY, I still felt like they got caught up, in that Bad Boy tidal wave. Post BIG death, and during Puff and Mase, goin crazy. Kim, 112, Cease (Missy, Mary J, piggybacking). Puff was outta pocket, that year (remixes and all). :yeshrug:

Nonetheless, WU had the summer too that year. I was in junior high. Death Row, was finished by 97'. :mjlol:

In real time, those nggas were poppin, wit all those different personalities (RZA, Meth, Ghost, Rae, ODB, etc). Then you had the offshoots. :wow:

97'-98/99ish....was just, so fukkin bananas for the culture. Glad I got to witness that shyt.

I was a dingy little lost nikka and they was just as dingy so I was all in!

Dingy is good way to describe it.

And it was such a shift compared to the cleaner sampling of the other big acts around 92.

shyt was just odd compared to the other acts of the time but it knocked
