or was it just cause of fashion? I know black hair hard to handle but I know it isn't impossible for a black woman to grow their hair out and maintain that shyt. just a preference but I hate everything about wigs/weave, fake eye lashes, and also makeup. to put it simple I love natural women...hope I didn't offend any of the brehettes but its just my opinion :yeshrug:

I honestly feel like it increased around early 2009 when natural hair was picking up traction. I noticed that when some women stopped getting relaxers to go natural they also began doing more protective styling/ wigs and weaves. But I think for some it became addicting.

Back in the 90’s and even early 2000’s weaves were worn but not as frequently. More bw wore relaxers. More bw found relaxed hair more acceptable and easier to maintain even though it was horrible on their hair. once they started going natural I noticed more weaves also started happening—as a mechanism to grow their natural hair out.

A lot of my friends with relaxed hair still or that wear their natural hair straight only, never wear weaves. My friends with natural hair that is easy for them to maintain(they can just do wash and gos, and they have looser textured hair) stay wearing their hair natural or in braids. But my friends that are natural but struggle with their natural hair, either with growth or just feeling cute in it, stay in weaves.

I’ve done it all—weaves, straight hair natural, natural, relaxers, etc. I’m now in locs—out of all the styles I’ve tried, this ended up being the easiest. I think weaves are fine when they look realistic and aren’t the only thing a woman wears. I think the issue now is that this current lace front trend is very wiggy looking/unnatural. My thing is if your a breh that hates weaves it’s simple to avoid women that wear them. But y’all know this is a sensitive topic for bw—these threads never end well.

There's enough natural haired women to keep you occupied. Your preferences are abundant these days - you don't have to concern yourself with lashes, makeup, & hair...

Question - Do you admire female celebrities, IG chics, etc? If so, loads of them have facial/body enhancements, glam squads, photo touch-ups, etc.

PS - My hair is 100% natural.

Where It’s Not Safe
Natural >> hair helmets

But I do understand the issue of trying to get a job and it deemed not proffessional. That is a real thing.

But if ur job allows u to wear locs or natural hair & u still wear weaves? There’s no excuse :yeshrug:

Its really nothing new OP. Black women wore wigs even in the past such as the 60s and 70s (white women as well). The difference is they didn't wear wigs as much as they wear them now.

What I mean is that sistas would wear the wigs on and off. Where as now it seems sistas who wear wigs will wear them more often.

Also in the past older black women wore wigs a lot as well. Probably every black american has an older aunt or grand mother that wore a wig. And had different wigs depending on the occasion.

The wig thing now is also a fashion statement and a way to rock different hairstyles its not so much due to being natural or not having hair. Cause there are plenty of sistas with hair or that have permed hair that rock lace front wigs and other types of wigs.

Finally its a way to not only protect their hair but also as a way to save time with fixing their hair. They can throw on a wig and keep it moving. My cousin who is in her 30s been rocking wigs for 15 years. Even though she has long hair. Even before many of these wigs such as lace fronts got big she was rocking them. Her thought was she can easily change her hair style everyday and also save her time with doing her hair.

Wanted to also say that weave and wigs wearing are based on regions too. My wife has mentioned (and I noticed too) how sistas in Dallas are more likely to wear wigs and weave then say sistas in OKC. Where they really don't rock wigs and weaves like that (braids yes. But not wigs and weaves). But like say in chicago you see sistas rock less naturals and more wigs than say sistas in Dallas.
