What will it take for the NBA to overtake the NFL as the most popular sport in the USA?

When Bron retires the league is gonna suffer greatly

Love him or hate him he's what the casual fan will tune into see in the finals

And he's so much better then anyone else in the league it's scary

Naw it's definitely not that serious. This isn't 5 years ago

Never will

Football is Americas game

It's appointment viewing, once a week and makes the games feel big

No one gives a fukk about game 57 of 82

The model of the NFL is just the best spectator model for the USA.

16 games keeps fans around even if a team seems to be bad, when you are a middle of the road NBA team you're season is usually over from tipoff

After that whole Harden game 6 fiasco, who knows. That's one of your most marketable, noticeable superstar and he had maybe the worst performance ever by a certified superstar.
the fact that it was a bad performance isn't the issue, it's that he quit before the game started.

Make it to where players can only get drafted after 3 years of college. That would bring better quality to the league, and do away with all those foreigners and 1-n-dones who get drafted in the top 10 and never pan out.

But I'm my opinion. I don't think NBA will ever be bigger then the NFL. The same way that the NCAA has the tournament, but still isn't bigger then NCAAF.

Now what if the NBA started allowing fighting like hockey ? :leon:Completely ridiculous, but would increase ratings. I've always wondered what would of happened next after Kobe got 2-pieced.

this is a preposterously bad idea supported by threadbare evidence

the way to get better at nba basketball is to play nba basketball........college and the pros are two completely different stratospheres of competition

NFL has always been a USA kinda of sport and that's a big factor looking at what the Kaepernick protest proved. Along with their partnership with the troops. NBA is more global, people from other continents recognize LeBron, Kobe, Steph and others. NBA players have had success in other countries and have become folk heroes.

The NFL is like PPV, as much as they want to stretch out the schedule, everyone knows the NFL owns Sundays between September and February. It's an event Sunday, a whole day dedicated to one sport. The NBA and other sports wish they had this.

Now who else wanna fukk with Hollywood Court?
To all the football is dying brehs out there.

What exactly are the 5'10-6'3 super-atheletic black nikkas going to do, if they can't play football. I mean they all can't be NBA point guards.

As long as white supremacy disenfranchises the black community, you'll always have a steady supply of super athletic young African American men willing to sacrifice their bodies for millions of dollars.:mjpls:

Sn: don't bring up that soccer Shyt, no one wante to play that

More people would want to play soccer if they knew how much dudes are making, a dude like Raheem Sterling is making more at 22 than anyone in his age grouping in the NFL.

More than 2 or 3 teams having an actual shot at winning a title (People will come in here and say it doesn't matter but yes it does)

Until then it'll never happen

In a normal NBA there would've 5 or 6.....about the same as the NFL...The NFL system of 16 games always beats 82 anyway.

The NBA could never overtake the NFL for a myriad of reasons. Amerikkka loves the idea of obedient boys who put their bodies on the line, denounce individuality and can be cut at any given moment. The NFL is so bloody pretentious to the point where they are practically doing character evaluations on Gus just to hit each other on the field yet still they have the most off the field incidents of any American sporting league by far (more people involved granted) People would have a heart attack if there was a player with the stature of Bron in the NFL who wasn't afraid to throw his weight around. Did you see the amount of guys coming out the woodwork to denounce Kap?

Ive had my own cult following of the "NBA is phony" people for years now. This is why it will never be as big as the NFL.
The NBA gained popularity, by modeling itself after another popular "sport" of the time, Professional wrestling. Storylines, heros and villains, rivals, and heel turns were what made the wwf very lucrative. and the NBA used that same model to grow in success.
Bird and Magic's era was the test drive. But the Michael Jordan chicago bulls era was the full blown turn. You had ur hulk hogan hero. Who had to get beat down by the "bad boys" for years, then he finally prevails. Then beats the old hero, and the torch was passed.
You know the story after that. You know the rivals, the big moments, the surprise endings. But all of it is scripted.
People say that the refs cant make the ball go thru the hoop. but they control the fouls... that is the most important part because foul calls are subjective. and if u control how the game is called, 1 team can be more aggressive than the other, which controls turnovers, fouls, shooting pct., and free throw points.
The Nba hurt itself by making the "sport" this way, because just like pro wrestling, it turns into a star driven league. only the stars get preferential calls. so their teams will be more successful. There are only so many stars in the league. Which means most of the teams will not have a chance at winning the big golden trophy. Which means fans in these regions have no reason to cheer for their home team. Just cheering for specific stars. You can only be marginally successful as an organization with this model.
Besides being a somewhat violent sport, which americans tend to like. The NFL, is way more balanced when it comes to the level of competition. Where each fan base can cheer for their own regional team. And they feel that their team has a shot at winning each sunday (any given sunday). And maybe winning the big trophy.
The main thing you have to realise is that everything is about money. The NBA is not a sport. It is a businesss. The goal is to make as much money as possible. Fairness is only ok, if its lucrative
