What will it take for the NBA to overtake the NFL as the most popular sport in the USA?

Even when Bird was there as popular as he was and the nba was it was still behind the NFL and MLB

With gambling/fantasy being so big I'd say there is almost zero chance anything catches up to the NFL aside from players dying on the field

The NFL has dared the public too stop watching with a horrible on field product, sociopathic commissioner, out of control players, but because of gambling people put up with it.
He said stars though, Bird was only one and his career was short.

What I meant, essentially, is that it's impossible.

It doesn't matter though. The American market is the only market for the NFL. NBA is global. It doesn't need the Real 'Murica market to thrive.

After that whole Harden game 6 fiasco, who knows. That's one of your most marketable, noticeable superstar and he had maybe the worst performance ever by a certified superstar.

When Bron retires the league is gonna suffer greatly

Love him or hate him he's what the casual fan will tune into see in the finals

And he's so much better then anyone else in the league it's scary

I think it can happen naturally if they can fix players resting. The sport of football itself is falling apart. People will stop letting their kids play football. I think it will suffer a similar fate to boxing. The NBA dominates the internet it seems to me in terms of discussion, youtube, social media, etc. and NBA players are far bigger stars than NFL players with 1/10th the off court problems. In the era of social media this is a big leg up for the NBA. Look at the amount of views and hype and how everyone talks about high school ballislife mixtapes, that shyt's crazy.
that is because basketball is a worldwide sport. Gridiron football is an American thing.

the NBA is already 10x bigger than the NFL will ever be on a global scale, which is why it has more internet presence, but it's not indicative of the popularity of each sport in the U.S.

More white superstar players and more violence are easy answers:hubie:

I actually think requiring players to play 2 years in college might work since fans of the NCAA will follow their favorite players to the league

He was a huge star for a decade

If it's just about watching other white people then the NHL would be huge

Hockey isn't an American sport. Nor does it provide the spectacle the NFL does. American Football speaks to the soul of modern America: fighter jets, military tributes, white coaches and QBs as the generals who lead the faceless negroes into literal violent battle... The helmets and the interchangeable nature of players on the roster dehumanize the bulk of the players so you never have to feel too bad about the crimes they commit, nor the fact they destroy themselves for non-guaranteed contracts.

Hockey is actually a fascinating sport. Football makes no fukking sense. No fanbase knows less about the games they watch.

Nothing in the foreseeable future. NBA just can't create that fever pitch like the NFL. Its a lot like wrestiling. They're too focused on 1 or 2 guys having to carry the company to get constant monster interest to the casual public. When that guy goes you got to start all over, NFL doesn't or should I say hasn't had that issue. I do think they're leaning that way with the way they're promoting QBs over everything but has yet to be seen.
When the NBA can create an importance of the games it'll help but it's too many games for people to care, they still haven't fully baseball out as #2

The NBA is more progressive and I think has superior longevity. Who knows how long it'll take, but I see the NFL imploding eventually.

Basically, the NBA will continue to grow at a rapid rate and the NFL will eventually kill itself I think. It won't be a normal takeover.

Don't go by the internet/social media

The NBA has a much younger fanbase that's why they dominate their. The average NFL fan age is 40 something their not on twitter

The nytimes had an article that theres over 90 million ardent NFL fans in this country meaning over 90 mill that consume the sport and look things up about it at least 3 times a week.

That's insane

Yes alot of it is gambling but regardless it's so far ahead of the other sports it's crazy
