I compare real soccer fandom to today's Sunderland vs Chelsea game League Cup game, if you were a Sunderland supporter. Sunderland are absolutely hopeless, last place in the league by a longshot, and were hopeless today. You know what the loudest cheers were until the 85th minute? When Sunderland got the ball deep in Chelsea's half for the first time in 85 minutes even though they looked bad, were outplayed all game and deserved to be down at least 3-0 but were only losing 1-0.
But in the 85th minute, there everyone was, a half-empty stadium for a shyt team losing to another team that's 5 times better making all the noise they could because the team got close, even if they weren't even threatening the other team's goal. That's what it's all about, a culture of negativity and nothing ever happening in your favor, but still feeling hope after 2 wins in 5 months.
Then they somehow score an undeserved goal in the 89th minute and go on to out-run, out-hustle, out-everything their big shot opponents when everyone's legs got heavy after 100 minutes playing on nothing but pride and heart cause they really did suck in everything they did today. They go on to win the game with 2 minutes left in the 118th and it was a game most supporters will remember forever, and their first positive moment 5 months into the season.. but that's not the point at all, because this doesn't happen 99.9% of the time.
