So you remember how we would add 20 + 15 back in elementary school? Add the 5 to the 0 to get 5. Then go and add the 2 to the 1 to get 3, right.....Well now they are teaching kids to break down the 20 and 15. So the kid has three 10s and a 5 to add together. Supposedly a different way of thinking that makes math easier?....... What have we heard about this COLI? Is it helping your kids?

iirc this is how they teach math in China/a lot of Asian countries and it makes computations a lot easier in the long run. Could be wrong tho

It doesn't matter really though, the change that needs to be made is to start teaching kids younger. I was being taught math starting at 3, it tunes your brain to mathematics and gives you a real leg up for later in life

I don't think there's a right way to teach basic calculus like this. I believe some brains will resonate more with some ways, others with new ones.

At the end of the day, if you're a parent, it's on you to ensure that your kids' foundations are rock solid.

But what if it’s 17 + 13? Are they breaking shyt down into fractions? That wouldn’t make sense. The original way seems the quickest. People love to fix shyt that’s not broke. But I hate math so I’m no expert. Had to build an amortization schedule today and I was feeling real dumb:francis:
Tried to use this new math to calculate 836+978..

If you’re taught the new way it’s just the same

2 “tens” is twenty and then 7+3 is ten... ten plus twenty is 30.

It’s not any harder truly, it’s just getting kids to break it down into simpler forms and only having to truly add single digit numbers at the beginning
