Canelo because he had a built in fan base was always overrated. Inside of the ring he was never as good as his hype outside. Basically his draw was far greater than his skills. So was Oscar's to be fair. the fighters who's skills matched their draw was Ali, SRL, and Money May. Bud is a underated because his skills are better than his draw.
Coincidentally Oscar and Canelo have a similar career but I would rate Canelo just below Oscar because the Quartey win puts him over the top. thats better than any Canelo win. Oscar did have a win over Pernell but was gifted that shyt so I aint counting that....but then it balances out a bit because I believe he beat Tito. Now its funny you guys say Lara ran from Canelo so Canelo deserved the victory....ok, well then the same thing can be said about Oscar running from Tito. Make no mistake, he ran like a mf but he had enough rounds in the bank I believe to get the victory. The Vargas win was another top win. Sturm and Castillejo were good wins.
Canelo best wins were a close bout (despite the scorecards) against Trout. the SD against Lara. Wins against Plant (who is probably a little overrated) and GGG who was definitely overrated. Maybe the win over Cotto you can give him but Cotto was at the end and it was still a good fight. Ryder, Charlo, Berlanga, Munguia, and Scull was a brutal 5 fight run against one dimensional fighters. Kovalev was washed, Smith, Saunders and Jacobs are good fighters but never great in their division. Chavez Jr was trash.
Canelo was a very good fighter and an all time great Mexican but me personally I have a few ahead of him. Just close to his era, JMM, MAB, and Morales were better. then you have Lopez, Zarate, Sanchez....its hard for me to put him up there. I can say in his era he was the best Mexican fighter for sure.
I put him below Oscar but probably higher than Andre Ward....so in the past 20 years he should be top 20 but I have to start ranking fighters and there were a lot that you have to put in there. No knock against him but Bud was better and maybe Inoue. I think Canelo makes top 20.
1) Floyd
2) Bud
3) Roy
4) Manny
5) B-Hop
6) Tito
7) JMM
8) MAB/Morales
9) Winky
10) Mosley
11) Oscar
Canelo falls outside of here along with Lennox, Ward, Cotto, Tszyu, Calzaghe. So he is easily top 20, I would even say top 15 of his era which is DAMN good.
keep in mind though he is a 1st ballot and cream of his class of HOF. because all of the fighters I mentioned are HOFers. even Hatton is in the Hall
Canelo is borderline ATG, I think due to his longevity he is ATG status.
