A beatmaker is an audio sequencer who programs equipment with no financial or engineering know how.

A producer, is the person responsible for the execution of the work and uses financial and engineering know how or outsourced resources to create a finished product.

When i read the liner notes and see the Beyonce co-produced a song, I visualize her sitting next to a producer while he's on the mpc and he lets her press a pad and when she does, she giggles

beyounce may garner co-production creds.
By supplying, the resources from engineering, or hiring the team that handles the components to complete a record.
She does not necessarily have to sequence anything on the mpc.
Or play a note of music, through some digital means or instrument.

So who are the beat makers and who are the producers? Who gets credited? This still doesn't make sense, does that mean Mark Batson = beat maker, Dr Dre = producer or Kanye = producer, Mike Dean = beat maker

:mjpls: Would someone mind explaining the two and then differentiate the people who are beat makers and the people who are producers?

Anybody can be a producer, basically, if I am in a studio with you, and I tell you "instead of this hi hat, use that hi hat, and don't use too much reverb on the drums" technically that makes me a producer...

But a beat maker actually has to make the beat...The beat maker is a producer and musician, because he/she actually goes through the creative process of coming up with a musical idea...

A beat maker is a producer, but a producer is not necessarily a beat maker...

Dr dre is a producer. He does not make beats. He basically fine tunes the beats of others then takes the credit. Dr. Dre is vastly overrated as a beatmaker.

Daz is a beatmaker & producer as well as

So is RZA a beatmaker these days or is he a producer? Or both maybe?

RZA would be both. All these people saying Dre doesn't make any beats any more, when was the last time you were IN the studio with him? I'm tired of hearing that shyt

Didnt anyone watch Hustle and Flow the movie

Anthony Anderson was the producer (and also the engineer cuz he was on the mixing board)
White dude was the beat maker
Terrence Howard was the rapper

But in hip hop, the beatmaker usually pre-creates the beat before they all enter the studio.

Irv Gotti, P Diddy, and Dre are notorious for being the producer and not actually the beat maker but being in the studio with the artist and creating a song together using an already made beat. ANd Im not trying to undermine what Dre and them do because an instrumental alone IS NOTHING compared to the final product

But many times the beat makers get producer credit when not even being in the studio with the artist while the song is recorded. They just made the beat and sent them to say a 50 cent or Jay-Z. And then the rappers do the rest of the legwork

AND THEN you have instances where the beatmaker is also the producer who goes inside the studio with the artist and creates the song (Just BLaze)

Anyhow I think the perfect example of producer and beat maker is DRE and Scott Storch. They were a great duo

DRE + Scotty > either of them on their own

a producer has his hands involved in pretty much all aspects of a track...the beat, the mix, the arrangement, how to finesse certain lines of lyrics, etc...the producer has a vision of what they wanna do and is in the studio with the artist and the engineer making a song.

a beatmaker makes beats...and then shops them. he gives the artist the raw tracks, says have fun with it and moves on.

but yeah, like guys are saying you can get production/producer credits for pretty much anything these days. "oh make that shaker louder on this part" - production credit. same thing with writing. "add an ohhh-oh after this line - writers credit.

Well Dre has had other people produce beats for him. Best examples are Scott Starch, Mike Elizondo, and Mel Man. It wouldn't surprise me if Dre had been doing that shyt for the last 20 years.

:ohhh: so beat makers are sort of like..."ghost producers" then, right?

No. They don't become "ghost producers" unless someone buys the beat, doesn't alter or add anything to it, makes the beat maker sign a contract, and the beat maker remains anonymous. These are instances where a producer will take sole credit.

Otherwise, if a producer adds elements, or makes minor tweaks, both parties share co-producer credits. There's also instances where beatmaker will get an "All instruments by (insert beatmaker here)", but not a producer credit. Sometimes a producer will just get an "additional production by (insert producer)" if they just added some minor touches.
