I agree, I can get fired at any time, especially in the volatile industry I work in, which is really why ~5 years from now, I'll be more interested in building wealth than attaining a certain salary goal.
However, it will be the skill sets I have learned at my job working for someone, that will allow me to either strike out on my own and build a business or invest my earnings into personal holdings. It takes drive and intelligence to develop those skill sets.
And I don't think I'm downplaying my upbringing at all. My mom had me at 20 years-old, unmarried. No college education. I made more money than she does in my first professional internship. I'm lucky to have been born in America, but I don't come from a privileged background.
