Here's some answers from the Kickstarter:

  • Can you make an open world game for just $2 million?
No, we cannot make an open world game for $2 million. Shenmue will be produced using both the funds raised from the Kickstarter and through other funding sources already secured by Ys Net Inc. We are very sorry, but due to contractual obligations, details of outside investments will not be disclosed.

  • Will the graphics be improved?
The screenshots and images posted are still in the early stages of development, and will continue to be improved. Please help spread the word on all of your social networks so that we can deliver a Shenmue 3 that lives up to its legacy!
  • How will the funds raised through Kickstarter be used?
The funding collected through Kickstarter will go towards game development, minus Kickstarter's fees and the costs associated with running a Kickstarter.

They need the kickstarter. YuSuzuki hasn't mislead anyone. He keeps saying he needs the kickstarter money. It was Sony who mislead with all those vague statements about funding and "partners" so people started to think the kickstarter isn't needed, cause it was being funded by Sony.

That's not the case. Shenmue 3 how we want it, is still very far from reality:sadbron:

Yu has been clear in saying they will make the game the budget allows, they don't make anymore money. It'll probably be some small episodic narrative driven thing just to finish the story. Not the AAA follow up to 2 that fans expect
I don't see any way in which the funding was secure before the kickstarter and that is what appears misleading about the whole thing. They are claiming that they "NEED" kickstarter support in order get the game out, but with a "goal" of 2 million don't you think that raises some red flags?

Shenmue 3 at the very least will cost 50 million to make, 2 million out of that is only 4% of what I think is a realistic budget for a game of this scale. You are meaning to tell me that they secured anywhere between 45-48 million dollars, but could not secure the final 2 million? 50 million is a conservative estimate IMO, unless it is indeed a budget episode game from here on out.

Maybe the behind the scenes deals put them in a position that they needed to raise 2 million dollars in interest in order to get funding. If that's the case, then go ahead and say it up front. I just find it a little weird that they can't be up front about the details when it comes to this when they are asking US to pay BEFORE we get the product. I tend to believe that they needed to secure the 2 million in interest in order to secure funding, not that funding was already secure before the kickstarter kicked off. I can't imagine a scenario in where Sony, Sega, and other sources can come up with JUST short of 2 million and let the fans put in the final 2 million.

No. At 2 million he was gonna make a 2 million dollar game. Obviously he would have had a bit more than that.

But people are thinking about it the wrong way. The goal was never to make a 40million dollar game. The goal is to finish the shenmue story with whatever money has can raise.

From Suzuki on redit last night

Q.

Love your work! You are a pioneer in this industry! As for my question:
How much game elements/features will we be missing in the game if the campaign doesn't reach the $5 million mark?

A.

I will say this: if we reach the $5 mil mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality.
At $10 million, it will truly have the features of an open world

The scope of the game is truly being dictated by how much money he can gather. Also keep in mind the last word on what happens still lies with sega. If he makes enough for a AAA game and anybody steps in to publish its gonna be sega.
