How is what kanye raps about less "real" than 50? I never got the notion that only street rap is the "real" rap. First off, a lot of these street rappers suck. They have no creativity. And to be honest, people out grew that trash. Not everyone was moving bricks or shooting up the block. Kanye made it cool just to be a regular guy from the hood who wasn't into gang activity. I welcomed the change. Troy ave, I remember when he used to show up to my showcases 10 years ago trying to get a buzz. He was alright then. Wasn't this cocky.

Hip hop will always be about the streets but there's been a concentrated effort from the industry the last half a decade to try to get that element out of the game.

?

You can be from the streets and not make gangster rap.. gangster rap isnt the only form of street rap.

There's tons of people makin street rap right now..dudes who came from the streets or hood rapping their perspective.. is that not street rap? its just not gangster rap.

Yes but Not in the mainstream. Meek mill is the only young street rapper in the mainstream, and the media acts like he doesn't even exist.

This is done on purpose

there is no industry effort to get street music "out of the game"...the game go where the market takes it...people got tired of the street shyt, and the average person (damn near everybody) can relate to regular guy music more so than gangsta music.

Yes Kanye birthed this whole generation, they are just less talented than him...but its always been that way when someone starts a new sound.

i kind of agree with this tho.this was the beginning of that im just a regular non-threatening everyday guy type of rapper becoming the status quo with "gangster" "aggressive content" rappers getting pushed to the back.this very event is what made nikkas like drake, wale & j cole possible.you always had non gangster rappers but they were never the majority like they are now.literally changed hiphop my nikka.
:wow:
Will Smith been around since the 80s tho :manny:

What he's saying is true, because since that day Gangsta Rap fell off. Looking at these comments it seems a lot of you wasn't listening to street music prior to 2007

the game go where the market takes it...
U mean where the labels and radio takes it... Hot 97 doesnt even have dude, or any new young NY nikkas, on their playlist, and its been like that for YEARS. If youre an ATL or even Cali nikka you will get more radio love than a NY nikka in NY... regardless of the music

who are people in NY listening to?
I can almost guarantee if someone was really popping in NYC they would get play on the radio.
That doesnt even matter though...those Drill videos get 1,000,000 views just off the word of mouth of the kids in the city...thats a real movement....NYC doesnt have that.
