Whats up with Troy Ave saying "real rap" is basically gangsta rap?

That's ultimately a good thing, bruh. I used to love all that, too, but as I matured, I realized most of it was foolishness and destructive. Sure, it also opened the gates to a lot of garbage music, but it's not like all that gangster shyt was great- we just thought it was great because we were younger and it was hot at the time. Look back at some of those beats and rhymes. Most of them are generic as hell, most of the songs sound the same, and on top of that, the messages are all negative.

It was somewhat destructive, but then again i don't see anything productive with the new aged rappers. At least the old generation despite their talks of violence, always had that revolutionary spirit, you don't get that in rap today everybody wants to pander to white america.

Cats in here, grew up and still want to re-live that era. Most of the early 00s production is :scusthov: and it was bound to get switched up when stagnation took place.

IMO, the bigger crime is when the "hood nikkas" censored Public Enemy and De La Soul and calling them "lame" because they didn't go the self destructive route, ON TOP OF the gangsta oldheads re-writing history, thinking that rap started out as gangsta rap. That pisses me off that the positive 80s artists are literally forgotten outside of a few.

What is more of a crime is that certain rap fans have took a tag given by a racist media in 'Gangsta rap' and ran with it. The truth is even the gangsta rappers, could be argued to be political rappers as well, Tupac Ice Cube and Nas were gangsta rappers, but they have songs and content more in line with Public Enemy's thinking than so called positive rappers like Drake or J Cole or even faux revolutionary/fashion guru Kanye West.

Why not? Both'em are known more for things they've said and/or done rather then the music they put out

Both use the "real street nikka" angle to promote themselves, and both of'em won't sell shyt and will mainly get recognition on message boards like this
Alley boy has some real street shyt behind him tho

Even Nas gets clowned by heads on here because he makes albums like Untitled where the complex issue of racism is addressed. Ice Cube gets the respect, but many will never talk about tracks like "Black Korea" or "Us"

prolific posting!!!

fam all that is weak.
Where is the progression in the music? These kids arent even trying.

I got bored last night and started watching 90's hip hop vids...Rap hasnt progressed since the mid 90's, shyt has been stale and folks have been using the same formulas forever. Its the same thing that happened to rock...it got stale and the sound didnt change much.

Whats missing from a lot of these cats is authenticity....of course Rae was no coke kingpin...but you can tell a lot of the old head were dudes from around the way...the type you wanted to watch because they had charisma.

I watch a video like this and get all :wow: because you could get a feel for what the era was like just from watching them. The current generation is trying to mimic this, but it so obviously phony because the vibe in the cities isnt like this anymore.
The reason why someone like Kanye gets so much love (aside from the fact he's crazy talented) is that you can tell he's just being true to himself, whether you love him or hate him.

It's funny, I was watching some new school videos the other day, and it's almost like their mimicking what other rappers used to do in their videos. Like they sat there in a mirror and practiced all the older heads mannerisms...(that Troy Ave "New York" vid is a prime example....

U watch older videos, especially Wu videos and you can tell dudes were authentic, just doing whatever the fukk popped up in their head. No practiced poses, just in the moment shyt.... That's what stars do...

I think that's the issue that people are really missing and not articulating correctly. Yeah we all know most rappers aren't doing what they said in 90% of their rhymes, but you bypass that when your dealing with "stars", charismatic stars. Everyone knew Cam wasn't some big time drug dealer, but dude was a star, put him on camera and you listened and watched.

It honestly feels like most rappers today just went home and bought some rapper starter kit and are following the instructions.... Like "add water"
