actually just had a business meeting with a good friend about this exact thing today


he invested in a metal refinery that basically melts down metals... so what he does is buy gold/silver from people who buy gold and silver ("Cash 4 Gold", "We Buy Gold" stores, pawn shops, etc.). Those places typically buy gold from regular people at around 93% of the price of gold on that particular day. They then sell the gold to my friend at around 95%. He then melts it down into bars or whatever, and sells the bars at 99% to people who are looking to invest in gold. A for all parties involved, correct?


Sounds easy, but the hardest part is actually building the relationships and getting the connects to all of these people. He got lucky because he owns mad jewelry stores so he's kind of connected in the industry. Hard part is already done, as he has the connects and refinery. Said the yearly return is 33%, which is obviously incredible. So I think I'm gonna give him a decent amount of the cash that I have saved up. Dude is like family to me, so it's not one of those situations where I can't trust him or anything like that.



shyt is actually not THAT difficult to pull off if you know people, you'd obviously have to have enough capital for the machinery, warehouse, and funds to buy gold in that kind of volume though.

it has NO utility... it has no practical usages... it is a useless commodity... easily replaceable by any other metal. the average cellphone has about 40 cents worth of gold in it... does that justify its insane price swings? absolutely not. buffet is speaking in a foreign language known as metaphor and hyperbole, and he said this in response to people who asked him why he didn't invest in gold in comparison to other businesses. the answer is simply gold doesn't DO anything, it is almost totally speculative, because even the much heralded link between inflation and gold prices is not even 100% concrete... as inflation has been going DOWN.
